THE KEY TO HAPPINESS

Bashō One Out

The Twisting Tail

He who creates three to five haiku poems during a lifetime is a haiku poet. He who attains to completes ten is a master.

Matsuo Basho

watchful summer child
glass-eyed, confronts rippling heat
on the horizon

from trunk to fountain
showering elephants spout
a water feature

tree-lined parks capture
friends at play until barks end
at the dog shelter

Haiku began in thirteenth-century Japan as the opening phrase of renga. Haiku broke away from renga in the sixteenth century and was mastered a century later by Matsuo Basho, who wrote this classic haiku: An old pond.

lush high cliffed coastline
fearless against crashing waves
feeds the cautious sheep

written in winter
a bored, sleepy cat ignores
the tale of the pen

pure white aurora
ribbons of the northern sky
lost in a snowstorm

The Old Pond

Old pond…
a frog jumps in
water’s sound

古池や 蛙飛び込む 水の音

♫ Green River ♫

Green River was my first CCR album…

Filosofa's Word

Yesterday, Roger posted this song in a comment on Annie’s post, and I immediately thought, “WHOA … a CCR song that I haven’t ever played before!”  For once, I was right … I haven’t played this one before.  Let me just correct that oversight now …

According to SongFacts …

This song was written by group leader John Fogerty, who explained in his Storytellers special: “Green River is really about this place where I used to go as a kid on Putah Creek, near Winters, California. I went there with my family every year until I was ten. Lot of happy memories there. I learned how to swim there. There was a rope hanging from the tree. Certainly dragonflies, bullfrogs. There was a little cabin we would stay in owned by a descendant of Buffalo Bill Cody. That’s the reference in the song to Cody Jr. [“Up at Cody’s…

Discrimination is a bigger AI risk than human extinction – EU commissioner | Artificial intelligence (AI) | The Guardian

Margrethe Vestager said although the existential risk from advances in AI may be a concern, it was unlikely, whereas discrimination from the technology was a real problem.

She told the BBC “guardrails” were needed for AI, including for situations where it was being used for decisions that could affect livelihoods, such as mortgage applications or access to social services.

“Probably [the risk of extinction] may exist, but I think the likelihood is quite small. I think the AI risks are more that people will be discriminated [against], they will not be seen as who they are,” she said.

Counterfeit pills now found in pharmacies across Mexico – Los Angeles Times

During five trips to Mexico, Times reporters purchased and tested 55 pills from 29 pharmacies in eight cities. A little more than 50% — 28 pills — were counterfeit.

More than a third of the opioid painkillers tested — 15 out of 40 — were counterfeit, the vast majority positive for fentanyl. One tested positive for a weaker medication and another tested positive for no drugs at all. Meanwhile, 12 of 15 Adderall samples tested positive for other substances, including methamphetamine and, in one case, MDMA, the designer drug commonly known as ecstasy.
