“183rd Story”

First published: Mar.18.2021

Jack was riding his horse to get to the near town.

In the middle of the way, there was a rest area. He tightened his horse to the place with water and hay and sat on the outdoor table for some tea.

Another man came to the rest area riding a donkey. He tightened his donkey exactly beside Jack’s horse and sat near Jack.

Jack told him: “Don’t put your donkey beside my horse. My horse kicks any animal who wants to eat its food.

The donkey rider didn’t pay attention and ordered tea.

Jack’s horse didn’t like to share food, therefore kicking the donkey very badly which broke its leg. The donkey rider complained to Jack and asked for compensation money. But Jack didn’t reply and stayed silent.

The donkey rider got angry and took Jack to the judge.

Opioids: Addictive and Useless?

CRAIN'S COMMENTS

OK, we know about opioid addiction. It’s almost impossible to have missed the numerous articles about the opioid crisis and the deaths due to fentanyl, from legendary musician Prince to actor Robert DeNiro’s grandson this week.

Now we find out that in some important uses, opioids have no value in reducing pain. In a newly reported study, opioids performed no better than placebo (typically sugar pills) in reducing back and neck pain. Back pain is the most common form of worker disability, and opioids have no value in treating it.(1,2)

Was it all marketing hype?

“A high-quality study gives evidence that opioids are no better than a placebo for acute lower back and neck pain. There are simply too many risks such as opioid misuse and no benefit. Even short-term judicious use has the potential to lead to long-term harms including intoxication, addiction, and overdose.”

Esperanto Learning for Membership On Public Transportation?

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

The Esperanto suffix “-an” denotes membership in something, a group of people, or a nation, as the last six lines of today’s notes show.

Group of happy and diverse volunteers

So, then, does speaking Esperanto while walking to the bus or metro or trolley stop denote membership in  something, other than the group of people who support good public transportation for everyone while learning a more inclusive language (European Union, we still wonder why this pan-European language has not yet been adopted as at least a working language, if not an official language, of the EU…)?  Given the interest  that some of my blog readers have expressed over several years in my language learning ability, I thought I might share some of my Esperanto language learning journey here with anyone who might like to see how this well organized language compares with other more organically evolved and randomly developed languages.  Once I…

♫ You Can’t Hurry Love ♫ (Redux)

Filosofa's Word

Another stressful night here in da ‘hood — a drunken party on the patio of the next-door neighbors, two calls to the police after what sounded like someone being murdered, and then … a gunshot … definitely NOT a firework.  Nobody dead or injured, at least as far as I know, but my stress level is … HIGH!  I need me some Motown to calm the jangled nerves.

This was written by the prolific songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland (those guys were so prolific they must have written songs in their sleep at night!)  Eddie Holland came up with the title to Brian Holland’s melody for this song.  According to Lamont Dozier …

“We were trying to reconstruct ‘Come See About Me’ and somehow it turned into ‘You Can’t Hurry Love.’ It was basically a gospel feel we were after.”

This was the first of a second string of consecutive…
