Violência gera violência

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

Paulo Freire

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

Freedom Imaginaries urges Jamaican Government not to deport Haitians

Petchary's Blog

Last November, the UN Refugee Agency made an urgent callfor countries not to forcibly return Haitians fleeing their country, because of the “devastating humanitarian and security crisis” there. The UN Human Rights Commissioner urged nations to “stand in solidarity with Haiti” and not to return Haitians “to a country that is extremely fragile.”

In their November announcement, the UNHCR “reminds States that Haitians who wish to seek international protection should have access to fair and efficient asylum procedures.” While the Jamaican Government asserted that the Haitians had not requested asylum, now they have done so through their attorney. This begs the question: did they not have the services of an attorney before, when they were charged, brought before the court, fined and ordered deported?

Meanwhile, international human rights lawyer and founder of Freedom Imaginaries, Malene Alleyne, has written to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign…

Alabama Wants A Divorce!

Filosofa's Word

It would appear that the state of Alabama no longer wishes to be a part of the United States of America.  Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court took Alabama to task over their extremely gerrymandered district maps and ordered the maps to be redrawn to include at least two majority-Black congressional districts. The ruling was that the current district map violated the federal law, the Voting Rights Act of 1965. More than fair when you consider that 27% of the residents of Alabama are Black, yet only one of the seven districts (14%) has a Black majority.  Only about half the Black people in the state have any representation under the map that was in use for the 2022 election.

So, back to the drawing board for Alabama, right?  Well, they decided to thumb their noses at us all – the Supreme Court, the Voting Rights Act, all non-white…

…So, back to the drawing board for Alabama, right?  Well, they decided to thumb their noses at us all – the Supreme Court, the Voting Rights Act, all non-white people, and the U.S. Constitution!  Instead of a fairly-drawn map, they redrew the map in such a way as to put more Black people into the original majority-Black district and there is no 2nd district in which Blacks are the majority.  The bill passed in the Alabama House by a vote of 74-27, and in the Alabama Senate by a vote of 24-6.  It was quickly signed into law by Republican Governor Kay Ivey.

It is understood among most people with a modicum of intelligence that every state is obligated to follow federal law, and every state is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Supreme Court.  Where does Alabama get off thumbing their nose, defying a well-established law and defying the Supreme Court?  If I were a Black person living in Alabama, I would very much feel like a slave at this point.  What’s next for the state … segregated schools and lunch counters?

IF this new map is allowed to stand, and I don’t see how it could be, but I’ve been wrong before, it could serve as encouragement for other states like Louisiana, Georgia, Texas and others to follow suit.  The arrogance, the utter arrogance of the white legislators in Alabama is astounding!  My initial reaction is that all federal aid to the state should be immediately halted.  If Alabama does not wish to play by the rules, does not wish to be a part of the United States, then why should we continue to support them?  But alas, that would only hurt the people we’re trying to help and protect.

If you ever doubted that white supremacy is still very much a part of the southern states, this should open your eyes.  The KKK still lives in Alabama.  Just ask Tommy Tuberville.

A boat arrives on a Jamaican beach, and the plan was to deport the Haitians therein…

Petchary's Blog

On July 10, 2023, a small, battered sailing boat carrying 37 Haitians washed up on Boston Beach, in eastern Jamaica. They had reportedly traveled from Jérémie in Haiti. The boat rested gently on the water’s edge, its sail flapping, while those who had been traveling it sat down close together on the sand, wondering what happens next.

Refugees, around the world, spend most of their time wondering what will happen next.

Local residents brought food and water to this forlorn group. The police in charge said it was very kind of them, but they should not have done so because the group may have brought with them A) guns and B) infectious diseases. After they had been “processed” it turned out they had brought neither. Nevertheless they were designated as illegals, and 29 men and women were brought to court, fined $7,000 Jamaican Dollars each (or three days’ hard labour)…
