Deep-sea mining plans delayed until at least next year after UN-backed watchdog discussion ends with stalemate – ABC Pacific

Plans to begin deep-sea mining have been pushed back to at least next year after a meeting of the UN-backed regulator in Jamaica ended without an agreement on how the industry would be regulated.

The Council of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) ruled out any immediate permission for mining to begin after a meeting in Kingston that ended on Friday but kept open a legal loophole that could allow it to begin next year…

California Attorney General to probe Chino Valley schools’ transgender student policy – Redlands Daily Facts

“Students should never fear going to school for simply being who they are,” Bonta said in the release. “Chino Valley Unified’s forced outing policy threatens the safety and well-being of LGBTQ+ students vulnerable to harassment and potential abuse from peers and family members unaccepting of their gender identity. Today’s announcement stresses our commitment to challenging school policies that target and seek to discriminate against California’s most vulnerable communities.” Source: California Attorney General to probe Chino Valley schools’ transgender student policy – Redlands Daily Facts

A Glimpse Into What Might Have Been | Filosofa’s Word

The thin line between Trump’s success and failure is why, despite the protests of conservative media personalities and Republican politicians, this indictment had to happen. There was no other choice. Even if his opponents must ultimately defeat him at the ballot box, it would have been untenable for the legal system to stay quiet in the face of an effort to put an end to the American experiment in republican self-government. Trump is the only president in the history of the United States to try to nullify an election and prevent the peaceful transfer of power. Extraordinary actions demand an extraordinary response… Source: A Glimpse Into What Might Have Been | Filosofa’s Word

Biden to create new Grand Canyon national monument to block mining – The Washington Post

President Biden is leaning toward designating a vast area near the Grand Canyon as a national monument to safeguard it from uranium mining, according to five people familiar with the plans.

Leaders of local tribes and environmentalists have spent years lobbying to protect areas near the park from potential uranium mining, which they say would threaten aquifers and water supplies. They have asked Washington to double the protected area around the canyon by including 1.1 million acres of public lands in a Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument.

A Texas man who advocated for a mass shooting of poll workers and threatened two Arizona officials and their children has been sentenced to 3½ years in federal prison, prosecutors said Friday.

Frederick Francis Goltz, 52, of Lubbock pleaded guilty earlier this year to interstate threatening communications. Goltz was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix, who also ordered three years of supervised release following the prison term.
