Do you ever feel like you’re stuck in the funk of bottom-feeding discouragement? Sometimes we need something tangible to remind us that we don’t have to dwell in that pit. When I look at representations of hope and humanity, I divert my attention away from those weary distractions that aim to be a destructive buzz kill like a vulture. These days, it seems like there’s so much unrest and conflicts happening globally, that it overshadows our trajectory of hope, peace, and love.
When I look at the image of the Statue of Liberty, an iconic national treasure and one of the most recognizable figures of freedom and democracy in the world, I embrace it with a symbol of hope that glows well beyond the border of our Independence Day celebration in the U.S. This monument comprises Liberty and Ellis Islands in the states of New York and New Jersey.
Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor who designed the statue, greatly admired the American fight for liberty and freedom, as well as the U.S. Constitution. The tablet in the Statue of Liberty’s left hand symbolizes the rule of law and American democracy, which has sadly been and is being viciously attacked by extremists in recent and current years.
When I observe the images of Lady Liberty, known as “Liberty Enlightening the World,” I am encouraged and my spirit is renewed by this monumental symbol of journeys, dreams, strength, love, courage, community, and yes, hope. Her torch is raised, not lowered. We must continue to lift our heads and let our light shine, refusing to allow some undeserving figure(s) to dim our rays of optimism, love, unity, and hope!
