Cape Verde reaches malaria-free milestone

Cape Verde was given the status by the World Health Organization (WHO) as it has not reported a single case of local transmission in three years.

Experts have described this as a major achievement.

Malaria is a huge killer on the continent. In 2022, 580,000 people in Africa died from the disease, amounting to 95% of fatalities worldwide.

The disease is caused by a complex parasite which is spread by mosquito bites.

Vaccines are now being used in some places but monitoring the disease and avoiding mosquito bites are the most effective ways to prevent malaria.

Cape Verde, a small island nation off the coast of West Africa, has taken years to reach this point by strengthening its health systems and increasing access to diagnosis and treatment of all cases.

Hiltzik: The drugstore loophole that threatens abortion privacy – Los Angeles Times

…The American legal system has a message for women concerned about their abortion rights: Don’t make the mistake of thinking that your pharmacist is your friend.

Thanks to a gaping loophole in federal healthcare regulations, some of our leading drug store chains turn over customers’ most sensitive private healthcare information to law enforcement agencies, even without a warrant.

That’s the finding of a subcommittee headed by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), which learned that all eight of the nation’s largest pharmacy chains have routinely turned over prescription records of thousands of Americans to law enforcement agencies or other government entities secretly without a warrant…

Open Thread | Calculated Cruelty: The New Phase for the Forced Birthers | 3CHICSPOLITICO

…It’s difficult to articulate the scale and cruelty of their vision, but I’ll try: This is a coalition of the most powerful anti-abortion groups in the country, coming together to change legislation, medical norms, patient care and more. They don’t just want to ban abortion in cases of fatal fetal abnormalities—but do away with prenatal testing altogether. It is massive, well-funded and terrifying. And they’ve launched it right under our noses.

I want you to think about that last part. They are waging a battle to prevent expectant mothers from being able to GET THE TESTS THAT WOULD INFORM THEM IF SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH THEIR CHILD.

I want women in this country to understand. The forced birthers will not be happy until abortion is outlawed IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. They don’t care.
And, I want you to completely understand this..
THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS IN RED STATES. Because, you can’t FIND any exceptions that have allowed abortions.

Have a BeauTEAful TEAlicious Day 🍵 | From Behind the Pen

January is National Hot Tea Month. Like poetry, tea has its own personality, its own unique flavor, and its own attitude. When reading a collection of poetry, or any book for that matter, what is your favorite cuppa tea flavor? Is it herbal, black, green, white, or oolong? Do you add, honey, milk, or sugar?…
