U.S. just expanded its territory by one million square kilometers • Earth.com
The areas encompassed in this claim include the Arctic, the east coast Atlantic, the Bering Sea, the west coast Pacific, the Mariana Islands, and two regions in the Gulf of Mexico.
The addition of this vast territory, equivalent in size to double the state of California, significantly strengthens the nation’s control over marine resources.
“America is larger than it was yesterday,” said Mead Treadwell, a former Alaska lieutenant governor and former chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission.
“It’s not quite the Louisiana Purchase. It’s not quite the purchase of Alaska, but the new area of land and subsurface resources under the land controlled by the United States is two Californias larger.”

Ohio poised to be 2nd state to restrict gender-affirming care – Los Angeles Times (Me: What’s next? Will Ohio require trans people to wear badges, as in Nazi Germany?)
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced proposals this month that transgender advocates say could block access to gender-affirming care provided by independent clinics and general practitioners, leaving thousands of adults scrambling for treatment and facing health risks.
Ashton Colby, 31, fears the clinic where he gets the testosterone he has taken since age 19 would no longer offer it. The transgender Columbus man believes he could eventually be treated by another provider that would meet the new requirements. But even a few months’ wait could leave Colby experiencing a menstrual cycle for the first time in many years.
“My mental health has been stressed,” Colby said. “These are feelings related to being transgender that I have not felt in years, but now I’m thrown into feeling devastated about my experience as a transgender person.”

IL CANTO DEI GABBIANI. – caterinarotondi

Come gabbiano sulle onde…
Ascolto
all’alba di ogni giorno
il richiamo della vita.
Lasciandomi cullare
fin dove le reti
cercano ristoro.
Aspettami…
all’imbrunire del giorno.
Aspettami sempre.
Come il canto dei gabbiani.
Come il porto la sua barca.
Come…
il crepuscolo la notte.
Aspettami come il mare.
Ti cullero
e ti lascerai andare.
Senza temere,
all’onda…
delle emozioni.

Seattle startup will recycle cotton – Darcy Hitchcock
Textile recycling today is basically nonexistent. Ninety-two million tons of textiles are thrown away each year. About 87 percent of all that material ends up in landfill. Less than 1 percent of the collected material becomes new garments in fiber-to-fiber recycling; most of the rest is downcycled — cut up to be used in rugs, insulation and other lesser-quality products.
While the company is based in Seattle, the recycling plant will be in South Carolina.
The facility, which will run primarily on renewable energy and have the capacity to create the equivalent of 80,000 T-shirts every year from recycled cotton clothing, is scheduled to come online by the end of 2024.
