A decade ago, a friend and I were walking up the stairs.
The lift was not functioning that day.
We cursed as we climbed.
She said, “next month I will be going for my knee operation.”
That got me thinking. For a year or so,
my wobbly, weak, and painful knees made climbing a challenge.
I enrolled for Tai Chi the following week.
I have never looked back since.
I don’t need to take knee supplements too.
I called Tai Chi, the ‘dancing meditation’!
Graceful yet deceptively challenging movements!
One of the toughest movements
is ‘snake creeps down. (see pose in picture above)
Many new students, including myself, looked on.
We (about thirty to sixty years old) shook our heads.
‘There is no way we can do this pose!’
It took me about three years
before I could do the ‘snake creeping down’!
…and my Tai Chi sifu was more than seventy years old! Still graceful and flexible!
Illustration: PHOTOCREO Michal Bednarek / ShutterstockThursday morning, January 18, 2024, the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), chaired by Bernie Sanders, held a hearing to discuss the current state of research and clinical practice regarding long COVID: Addressing Long COVID: Advancing Research and Improving Patient Care. Senate.gov provided an overview of the need for and purpose of the hearing:
“The impacts of this pandemic are still being felt by millions of families,” said Sanders. “We cannot turn our backs on the American people who continue to struggle with long COVID. At all levels of government, we must do more to address the health crises countless Americans are living through because of the coronavirus. Lives are at stake. I look forward to hearing from patients, experts, and researchers about what we must do to address this crisis, including the advanced research and patient care that so many Americans desperately need.”
Today, millions of Americans live with long COVID and its many symptoms. These include fatigue, cognitive impairment (commonly referred to as brain fog), muscle or joint pain, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, sleep difficulties, mood changes, and more. With millions of Americans suffering each and every day, more must be done to address this crisis…
Havia jeito de asa para o lado do Sul
a maré previu a fase da lua
e a maresia invadiu meu quintal
eu era só teu olho diante da janela
a tarde tinha a brisa
tinha gesto

A new study has revealed how much carbon bottom trawling releases into the atmosphere.
Much of the damage done by dragging huge nets – some as big as 10 passenger jets – across the bottom of the sea to catch fish has been clear for a long time. But this new research reveals the practice is also an unaccounted source of carbon emissions that is “too big to ignore”.
“Only recently, we have discovered that bottom trawling also unleashes plumes of carbon, which otherwise would be safely stored for millennia in the ocean floor,” says Dr Trisha Atwood, a marine ecologist from Utah State University and National Geographic Pristine Seas.

I chose black or the colour black has chosen me
withered stars, curled up under the canopies
the earth, the air and naked trees
the close calls from the tips of those misty hills
the isle of refugees
the horizon indistinguishable from the port
the clouds lower than the water
when the storms are eager to swallow whole the light
-house
trying to find the light the night sings its own tune
the wind of the tides flows
I’m on the roof of a house
the silent rafts are blown away by the cliffs
as the western glebe preen its feathers, flies away in the October light
I dip my fingers into the water
pick up the smell of fish scales so the sea may wash it away
I’m familiar with the nightmares
bulging like a metastasized nipple
passing a mirror in a dark corridor
I’m the testament of the sky
a dead fish on the cold boat deck
my neighbour is an annoying spectre
in thick glasses, on me
he drops his bombs
the days unbelievably adrift
me falling
like a boat smashed to smithereens
my death is slow
the grey waves crashing in my lungs
a version of migrating fish
or the procession of a funeral
on a bed soaked with sweat
where the dwarves grows nonsensically in a quadratic equation
I find an annotation describing the saints and apostles
in a tattered dream rows away in a boat

We sit – Ophir, Yo’av, and me – with 74-year-old N. and her 36-year-old daughter G., by their beautiful hillside cave and modest dwelling in Maghayir al-‘Abeed. I spotted colorful balloons hanging from a pole, and wondered why. “It was beautiful, like today, so we made a celebration for the beautiful day”, answers G. “And how has it been with the settlers?” I ask. “The last few days were quiet, hamdulillah“, answers G.
N. said she is afraid all the time. G., too, says they live in fear all day, every day. We sat there for a long hour, coddled by the winter sun. It seemed that fear, too, is being mollified. That was on Monday, January 15.
We then visited Taban, also in Massafer Yatta a couple of hills to the south. We saw young A., who is studying to be a veterinarian with our support.

On Wednesday morning, the 17th, we had to visit Maghayir al-‘Abeed again – Ehud, Yohi, Irena and myself – because a few hours earlier, at 2:30 AM, three settlers kicked open the door of the room where N., G., and G’s 14-year-old son S. were sleeping their fearful sleep. They immediately turned to 74-year-old N. who sleeps to the right of the entrance. “WHERE IS YOUR HUSBAND????” they roared. As N. tries to sit up and reply, one of them hits her face with a fist. “There is no husband”, she answers. He roars again: “WHERE IS YOUR HUSBAND????”, she tries to answer again – and again a fist into her face. Thus, three times, with the addition of kicks to her legs. [a defenseless 74-year-old widow]

Couldn’t agree more. Our skies are cleaner our oceans are a little clearer and seeing animals in places we haven’t in decades. Long last the lockdown!!

You’ve all heard me say more than a few times that for every ‘right’, there is an accompanying responsibility. Of late, my pet peeve has been people’s claim to various ‘rights’ such as freedom of speech under the 1st Amendment, or the ‘right’ to own a gun as covered by the 2nd Amendment, but they don’t accept the responsibility to use that speech or that gun responsibly so that it doesn’t cause harm to others. I’ve long said that your rights end where they step on my toes. When I saw Dr. John Persico’s post first thing this morning, I said, “BINGO!!!” He is spot-on and I think (most of) you will agree. Thank you, John, for this excellent reminder …
