Traditional healers in Philippines keep their ‘forest pharmacy’ standing – Stigmatis News

  • The island of Siquijor in the southern Philippines is famed for its traditional healing practices; less well known is the role its healers play in conserving the island’s forests.
  • Traditional practices and beliefs encourage respectful and sustainable harvest of medicinal plants.
  • The island’s healers’ association also collaborates with researchers and a government reforestation initiative to monitor and cultivate medicinal trees in the island’s forests.

CANTABON, Philippines — In the heart of Siquijor province in the southern Philippines lies the secluded mountain village of Cantabon. Amid the verdant trees, the healing hut, or balay pahi-uli, of shamans Noel and Juanita Torremocha stands as a serene sanctuary, offering solace to patients seeking traditional folk remedies.

Siquijor is famed for its thriving traditional healing practices that draw a diverse crowd, including international visitors, seeking remedies for a wide array of health concerns ranging from simple sprains to severe ailments like cancer. The Torremochas are part of a community of 300 mananambal, or healers, who have kept this heritage alive for generations.

La basura, ¿el nuevo petróleo? – Stigmatis

Margaret Thatcher: The Reality | beetleypete

Since I started blogging, I have seen a lot of opinions on social media about Margaret Thatcher. She is often praised as ‘Strong’, ‘Determined’, and lauded because she was the first female Prime Minister in the UK.

However, one man summed her up nicely, and in my opinion, truthfully.

That man is the former Labour politician and supporter of the working-class, Dennis Skinner.

‘Dennis Edward Skinner is a British former politician who served as Member of Parliament for Bolsover for 49 years, from 1970 to 2019. A member of the Labour Party, he is known for his left-wing views and republican sentiments. Before entering Parliament, he worked for more than 20 years as a miner’.

He is 92 years old today, and I am publishing this to let him know I agree with him 100%…

A promise, a secret language – Bio-Blogger

His Promise is unique;

My dearest Love,
I wanted to take a moment to talk about Promise Day and what it means to me.

To me, Promise Day is not just about making promises to each other, but it's about the deep bond we share, a bond that is unique and special to us. It's like a secret language that only we understand, known only in the depths of our hearts and in the eyes of a higher power.

I promise you that this bond we have will always remain a beautiful mystery to the world, but a cherished truth between us. It's something that brings us closer, strengthens our connection, and fills our lives with love and blessings.

No matter what challenges we face, I promise to hold onto this bond, to nurture it, and to keep it alive until our last breath. Our love is something truly extraordinary, and I am grateful for it every day.

Sending you all my love and the promise of a lifetime together.

Yours always,
..... ♥️
She:

My Dearest Beloved,
With every breath I take, I am reminded of the boundless love that resides within my heart for you. You are not just my love; you are my life's greatest joy, a treasure more precious than any gemstone.

As I inscribe these words with the ink of my soul, I vow upon the sacred cosmic elements and the divine presence of the Almighty to protect our love, our life and our joy from prying eyes. You are my love, my life, my joy and more precious to me than any jewel that adorns the crowns of kings. With every beat of my heart, I cherish the bond we share, knowing that it is a gift bestowed upon us by the universe itself.

In your presence, I find solace, strength, and unseen happiness. Your essence illuminates my existence, like a radiant star guiding me through the darkest of nights. Together, we are woven into the unknon destiny, our souls still in a madness of eternal love.

As I pledge my undying devotion to you, I invite the brilliance of the cosmos to infuse this promise with its divine light, making it shine like a beacon of hope in the vast expanse of eternity. May our love be a testament to the beauty of the universe and the power of love's enduring embrace.

Forever and always,
Only your's.

Review: The Threads Of Time, The Fabric Of History: Profiles Of African American Dressmakers And Designers From 1850 To The Present, by Rosemary E. Reed Miller | Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

I read this book for the tours I created while I was running my walking DC cooperation tour guiding company, SHIRtours, in DC, in 2012.  The well-known work of Elizabeth Keckley is mentioned first, after a brief biography of how Lincoln’s dress maker came to DC with her son in early 1860, quickly became Mary Todd Lincoln’s dressmaker and confidant before a misunderstanding over Keckley’s book (Behind the Scenes: Thirty Years as a Slave and Four Years in the White House).   Reed Miller goes on to mention Margaret Mohammit Hagen, who established dressmaking shops in DC in the late 1800s, and apparently had an interest in medical electricity, and died in New Jersey in the middle of the next century, but is buried in Baltimore.  The Black Fashion Museum also figures prominently in this book, described as having opened in 1979 in Harlem, and then moved to DC in the early 1990s.  It apparently stood at the site of what the author described as having been successively, the site of an Underground Railroad station, then the location of the Ladies Relief Association, at some point also the Sojourner Truth Home for Girls.  She also cites Lois Alexander’s 1982 work Blacks in the History of Fashion.  While the editing left a good bit to be desired, there was interesting information to be gleaned from this work, and it continued to raise awareness of Black women hidden behind the scenes of history…
