And On The Lighter Side … | Filosofa’s Word

Since my a.m. post was a bit of a dark rant, I thought I’d bring some balance to the day by sharing Sally & Debby’s latest ‘Funnies’ post … and it IS definitely funny, for it made me chuckle aloud a few times!  Thank you, Sally & Debby, for always bringing a ray of light into our lives!

‘Shame! Shame!’: Arizona Republican leaders block effort to repeal abortion ban | Arizona | The Guardian

Arizona’s state Republican leadership halted an effort by Democrats on Wednesday to repeal an 1864 law banning almost all abortions, which the state supreme court this week ruled could go into effect.

The move came after Republican lawmakers in the state had denounced the court’s decision, including some who previously expressed support for the law. Donald Trump and other high-profile Republicans, such as the Senate candidate Kari Lake, had also declared their opposition to the ruling with Lake urging lawmakers to “come up with an immediate commonsense solution that Arizonans can support”.

Don’t Ask and I Won’t Tell! 🐸 | From Behind the Pen

Have you ever had one of those days when you just don’t feel like figuring things out, and you simply roll with the flow, no questions asked? Well, today is one of those days. Don’t ask, and I certainly won’t tell! When I looked at the above image with these Red-eyed Tree Frogs, I laughed and just said, “Okayyyyy!”

If you have to take your foot off the pedal, your hands off the steering wheel, and then step away from the vehicle ma’am/sir, like the Nike slogan says, “Just Do It.” While you’re at it, relax and have fun. Why wait?

Bakersfield Japantown – In the Breadbasket of California – AsAmNews

Potato farm in Edison, 8 miles from Bakersfield, CA

In the heart of the ‘Breadbasket of California,’ a small but vibrant community of Japanese Americans thrived in Bakersfield, a farming center nestled in the Tulare Basin of San Joaquin County, until June 1942. Despite the challenges, their farms, blessed with fertile soil and an arid climate near the Kern River, bloomed with various vegetables, nuts, and fruits, a testament to their resilience and determination.

In 1940, 175 people lived in Bakersfield, and 61 lived in the countryside with seasonal laborers. Bakersfield Japantown had three hotels and seven stores, including a tofu-ya fish, and vegetable markets. Its society centered around the Japanese Buddhist temple and Japanese Methodist Church.

From the Manzanar National Historic Site Collection, on October 17, 2008, in Sacramento, Taeko Joanne Iritani recalled her childhood in Bakersfield with Kirk Peterson…

Michael Hiltzik: Should Hospitals Have the Right to Deny Care to a Woman Whose Life Is in Danger? | Diane Ravitch’s blog

Michael Hiltzik, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, writes about state laws that deny women an abortion even if their life is in danger. The case involves Idaho law challenging federal law, and it’s heading for the Supreme Court. Provide the medical care needed or let women die?

He writes:

Here’s how the legal departments of two hospitals, legislators in two states and even the Supreme Court turned a pregnancy emergency for Mylissa Farmer into a life-threatening nightmare.

Farmer, 41, was 18 weeks into her pregnancy when her water broke prematurely. Her doctor instructed her to go to her local hospital in Joplin, Mo.

There, the hospital’s labor and delivery doctors determined that she had no amniotic fluid left. Her baby had “‘zero’ chance of survival” and she risked infection, blood loss, and even death. The doctors advised her that they could help her undergo an “inevitable miscarriage,” or she could wait, at risk to her life…
