Carl Erskine, Dodgers pitcher in both Brooklyn and L.A., has died – Los Angeles Times

Carl Erskine, one of the last living Brooklyn Dodgers and a mainstay of a pitching rotation that carried the team to four World Series in the 1950s before the team headed to Los Angeles, has died in his hometown of Anderson, Ind.

A thoughtful man who threw himself into charity work later in life, Erskine died early Tuesday morning after a brief illness. He was 97.

Part of a nearly mythical group of ballplayers who were anointed “The Boys of Summer” by author Roger Kahn, Erskine played alongside Pee Wee ReeseDuke SniderRoy Campanella and Jackie Robinson, who became his closest friend on the team. Later in life, Erskine credited Robinson for teaching him some of life’s most important lessons — tolerance, patience, care and understanding.

Las Vegas, Cincinnati officials track measles exposures from infected visitors | CIDRAP

Health officials in the Las Vegas area and Cincinnati have issued warnings about potential measles exposures in public locations linked to sick visitors from out of state, part of an ongoing rise in measles activity in the United States.

Meanwhile, two more cases have been reported in Chicago’s suburbs.

Las Vegas patient visited several area locations

The Southern Nevada Health District reported a confirmed infection in someone who visited Clark County between April 1 and April 6.

The person stayed at the MGM Grand hotel and spent time at several of the facility’s attractions. Health officials said the patient also visited locations throughout Las Vegas and Henderson.

“People who may have been exposed should review their immunization status and contact their health care providers if they are not fully immunized against measles or have not already had the disease,” the officials said.

Cincinnati’s second case involving a visitor

The Cincinnati Department of Health warned of potential measles exposures at a hotel and restaurant downtown after a visitor from Illinois tested positive for measles, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported, citing local health officials.

The case is the city’s second involving a sick visitor this year.

Gullah Museum – Georgetown, South Carolina – Atlas Obscura

INTERESTED IN LEARNING WHAT LANGUAGE you’re speaking when you sing “Kumbaya?” Curious about where the expression “40 acres and a mule” comes from? Want to know where gumbo was invented? (Spoiler alert—it wasn’t in Louisiana.)Stop by the Gullah Museum in Georgetown, South Carolina. These questions and more are answered by a visit to this family-run, one-room museum designed to educate visitors about the rich history and culture of the Gullah Geechee, and how they shaped America. The museum uses a wide variety of displays, artifacts, and 3D “story quilts” to convey history in a uniquely visual way.Who are the Gullah Geechee you ask? They are the descendants of the enslaved Africans brought specifically to the marshlands of South Carolina in the late 1600s—and later Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina—to grow rice and make indigo dye. Because of their isolation on coastal and barrier island plantations, they preserved many elements of their African heritage to create a truly unique culture and the first English-based creole language in the United States known as Gullah. The museum showcases the knowledge, skills, and culture the Gullah Geechee’s ancestors brought with them from Africa—from the architectural element we call the front porch to the musical genres that make up the American songbook, to the origins of cattle ranching in the United States…

Das metades de tantas, (eu) inteira II – O Outro Lado

Fazia perguntas a si mesma
já com a resposta encravada
na garganta
como se fosse lâmina –
pode, mas não deve.
queria dizer
– faço porque quero.
Como a nuvem que traz o trovão
… ecoando céu afora.
Pensou na pureza dos desejos
indecifráveis e suspirou
Nem era farol, nem norte.
Apenas rota –
cruzando caminhos.
