They are “Jah people”: Jamaica must end arbitrary detentions and forced returns of Haitian asylum seekers – Petchary’s Blog

In this spirit of solidarity, we urge Jamaica to:

  1. Put an end to the systematic use of arbitrary detentions and forced returns of Haitian asylum seekers;
  • Reform asylum procedures to ensure strict compliance with the Refugee Convention. In particular, establish appropriate facilities for the reception of asylum seekers and ensure access to an effective asylum procedure that guarantees the principle of non-refoulement;
  • Conduct a full and thorough investigation into the conditions of detention of Haitian migrants and asylum seekers in Jamaica, including specific reports of abuse;
  • Grant asylum to the 37 Haitian asylum seekers in St. Mary. If the government refuses to honour their claims, grant them leave to stay on humanitarian grounds so that they can access basic rights. As a matter of urgency, ensure that the children have access to education, regardless of their status; and
  • Work with CARICOM, the international community, and civil society to establish a regional rights-based framework for the protection of Haitian refugees and asylum seekers in line with principles of humanitarian assistance, protection, cooperation, and international solidarity. To operationalise this framework, work with CARICOM and other stakeholders to establish a regional inter-agency coordination platform for Haiti to implement humanitarian, protection, and socio-economic integration activities.

‘We’re firefighting in the background’: the pharmacists coping with record drug shortages | Health | The Guardian (Me: Tory mismanagement)

A survey of thousands of pharmacists has found that patients’ health is being put at risk by record drug shortages in England, leaving patients and pharmacists frustrated they cannot get the medicines they need.

“I just feel like the government and the NHS aren’t taking this seriously enough, because we’re firefighting in the background silently,” says Reena Barai, who owns and runs a pharmacy in south-west London. “They’re not realising the impact of this. Is it going to take patients to die without medication for them to start waking up and realising that this is a really serious issue that needs solving?”

House quashes Marjorie Taylor Greene motion to oust speaker Mike Johnson | Marjorie Taylor Greene | The Guardian

The House easily quashed Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resolution to oust the Republican speaker, Mike Johnson, on Wednesday, as members of both parties came together in a rare moment of bipartisanship to keep the chamber open for business.

The motion to table Greene’s resolution was 359 to 43, with 196 Republicans and 163 Democrats voting to kill the proposal.
