African Dwarf Crocodile Osteolaemus tetraspis — Palm Oil Detectives | Barbara Crane Navarro

African Dwarf Crocodiles are timid nocturnal animals and solitary hunters. They predate mainly on small animals in rivers or nearby to the riverbank. They are also known as the Broad-Snouted Crocodile or the Bony Crocodile are the smallest extant species of crocodile in the world and are typically around 1.5 metres in length. They face persecution by humans and other animals and spend most of their daylight hours resting in burrows they make along riverbanks. They are vulnerable from #timber and hunting. A Big Day for Jamaica’s birds (and the children) – Petchary’s Blog

What’s Global Big Day, you may ask? Well, it’s the biggest day of the year for global birdwatchers – when everyone is supposed to go out with binoculars and fancy cameras and even iPhones and “capture” birds. These are then recorded on eBird, a huge database that is a collaboration with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. There is an eBird Caribbean (managed by BirdsCaribbean), so you can find your Jamaican Woodpeckers and White-eyed Thrushes on the checklist. You can also add photographs and audio to your report. Of course, you can do this any day, not just one day per year!

Global Big Day is a 24-hour snapshot of what birds are where, and when. Here is an amusing checklist of how to prepare from BirdsCaribbean, which the aspiring birder can use at any time. And here is a more detailed account of how to participate by donating to BirdsCaribbean. It’s not too late!

So in Hope Gardens, the Terrific Trio of Damany Calder, Damion Whyte, and Justin Saunders led the way, with fantastic photographic backup by the Dynamic Duo of Stuart Reeves and Kahlil Francis. Here are just a few of the beautiful photos that were taken. We hope this will inspire parents and children to become birders! Warning: It’s quite addictive!

an amphetamine tainted sadness [NF 20:9] – Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm

a waste of a springtime, but at least there was a breeze
there’s no poem
blooming
like a memory
that was lost

surpassing time
an amphetamine tainted sadness
the optimistic
announcements
from politicians

the people unaware
that even the sunlight
drops
and fall

censorship
unsanctioned
in the smuggle of
freedom

your dignity is wrapped
in a box
ribboned, and you thought it was a gift
Tet

you’re ready
with a sheet of polymer
caressing it
its coolness inside your free fitting “áo dài”
like the madame
inspectors
inspecting
temperatures

then there’s
a person with ears like a rabbit
snoring

a pigeon
whispering
about everything
that’s coming
from behind

Russia to Build ‘Migrant Village’ for Conservative American Expats – The Moscow Times

Russian authorities will launch construction of a village outside Moscow for conservative-minded Americans and Canadians next year, the state-run RIA Novosti news agency reported Thursday.

Russia has for years positioned itself as a bastion of “traditional” values in contrast with Western liberalism as its relations with the West have deteriorated over its 2014 annexation of Crimea and 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Timur Beslangurov, a migration lawyer at Moscow’s VISTA Foreign Business Support, claimed that “around 200 families” wish to emigrate to Russia for “ideological reasons.”

“The reason is propaganda of radical values: Today they have 70 genders, and who knows what will come next,” RIA Novosti quoted Beslangurov as saying, echoing President Vladimir Putin’s frequently deployed grievances against Western countries’ comparative gender freedom.

“Many normal people emigrate and are considering Russia, but they’re faced with huge bureaucratic problems with Russia’s migration law,” he said…

Fokus auf Abfall / … Focus on waste (garbage) – Stella, oh, Stella

… Some municipalities here in Denmark are really committed to sorting waste. In our former municipality we only had two containers: plastic/metal, cardboard/paper, residual waste and bio waste. Here we have one more for glass and milk cartons, as well as the red box for dangerous waste like chemicals and batteries. I am in favour of waste sorting, but, when I read that 72% of the collected plastic waste is being burnt anyway, I get a bit miffed and feel duped. In the USA it is even said to be 90%. And plastic waste fills a lot in Denmark; everything is packed in plastic. That could be at least reduced by half.

… When I buy veggies in the supermarket, I usually don’t take a plastic bag, as I wash my veggies or fruit before I use it resp. eat it. If everybody brought this problem up in their supermarkets, I am sure things would change, just like the matter with the eco-eggs.
