Marii Freire – Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

Freedom – normabobb

We experience freedom when we become unconcerned about what our associates and family think about us. Our situation in life is fluid, it is constantly changing. Adopting habits that are vital to our wellbeing is essential. Embracing attitudes that are harmful to us because we want to fit in or get ahead in our career or social standing denigrates us and fosters moral morass.

तुम्हारे मासूम से रुखसार में

मैंने हमेशा सुकून पाया है…

पर उसी रुखसार ने हर बार

मेरी मंजिल को भरमाया है…

I’ve always found solace

in your innocent face,

yet that same gentle look

has often led me off base…

My Calathea Has Better Habits Than Me! | From Behind the Pen

My Peacock Calathea responds to the natural order of life better than me.

So here’s the deal. I try to get in my fair share of sleep every night, but sometimes it’s a hit or miss, or more often, it’s a probably. After a nice cup of hot tea and/or a long warm bath, I might purr like a cat and land in a wonderful dreamscape. My problem is consistency, however, and it has been a functional long-term issue with me. Yet somehow, I manage to get my “zzzzzzz’s” on, drift into la-la-land, and awaken with renewed energy…I think.

Now, we know that our circadian rhythm helps us to adapt to physical, mental, and behavioral changes in the body’s natural 24-hour cycle of operation. But recently, I found out something very interesting about my Peacock Calathea (as seen in the photos above) that makes me look like a sleep-deprived nincompoop.

This plant, formerly classified as Calathea Makoyana, shows off dark green leaves with light green feathering and the foliage is purple underneath. But here’s the kicker. According to thesill.com:

Marantaceae is named for the tendency of plants in this family to droop, or ‘pray’ at night. The daily movements of the plant’s leaves are known as nyctinasty. Various plants in this family move their leaves up at nighttime and lower them in the daytime in accordance to a circadian rhythm. They move their leaves by changing the water pressure in their pulvini, the swollen nodes at the base of the leaf, along the leaf stalk (petiole). It is believed that these movements are meant to follow the sun’s movement in the sky, in order to maximize light absorption.

When I first saw the plant on the right before I went to bed one night, I had no idea what was happening and began to worry. I thought I would need to take the plant back to the store. But the next morning, when I got up and looked at the plant it looked like the picture on the left. So of course after the fact, I had to search further because the representative at the store didn’t give me intimate details about my new plant.

I was pleasantly surprised, no it’s more like super excited to learn that this plant symbolizes a new beginning. It comes from the expression we’ve all heard before ‘to turn over a new leaf.’ So as evening approaches, the plant leaves fold upward together in the form of praying hands, which is why it is called a prayer plant. I found it fascinating that this plant responds to its circadian rhythm, meditates (for the most part) when it gets dark, and unfolds in the morning, welcoming a new day and symbolizing a new beginning.

Yep, I think it’s safe to say, I learned something new and wise from a plant!
