In 2021 I wrote a post, “Feeling Special?” where I ruminated about saving things for special occasions when sometimes those special occasions never come. Why wait?
We save our special clothes, shoes, jewelry, fragrances, dinnerware, food, or decorations for times that may only roll around once a year. Too often, I have seen some people pass away in my family, holding on to special occasion items they were saving with the price tags still on them…unused.
We learn that time is not promised, nor does it guarantee that the right time will arrive right on time as planned. I learned how to deal with my special occasions of missed opportunities. That’s why I tell everyone to celebrate every day, although some days do not look like or call for a celebration. Celebrate anyway. Celebrate the gift of life, hope, joy, love and peace. I pull out all of the things I’d purchased and forgotten about in my closets or in the cupboard, just sitting there patiently waiting to be used. Oh no honey, not anymore!
So when I set the table for dinner, I set it with my good dinnerware and glasses I used for the holidays, even if we’re eating a Chef salad. Oh, Emily Post and Martha Stewart would be so proud! When I run to the grocery store or Dollar Tree, I dress as if I’m shopping in a fine department store. Yes, I know I get the occasional “curious onlookers”, but that’s okay with me. And when I am home not planning on going anywhere that day or when I’m doing yardwork, I put on something bright and cheery, and always put on lipstick and my hoop earrings.
Oh, and if you like a vase of fresh cut flowers, if no one gives you some, or you can’t walk out to your garden and cut some to put on your counter (and men this goes for you too) then buy your own, even from the grocery store or farmers market! Of course, if you suffer from allergies, I understand. But find something else affordable you have been waiting to receive as a gift but haven’t gotten, then just gift yourself before you kick the bucket. Yeah, I know that sounds a little morbid, but it’s true.
I say, stop waiting and waiting and waiting for a special occasion to do something special, when you can make any occasion special for yourself.
