I was reading an online forum and became somewhat smitten by the answer to a question. The question, “I am 72 years old, and I feel old. Why?” The answer seemed a little brutal because the admin answered quite tersely, “That’s because, unfortunately, you are old.” Oh my gosh, what a sucker punch to the stomach!
After getting over the initial shock of how insensitive the response sounded, I read further and was happy that a few of the comments from readers were a little more compassionate. There were some people who were older than the individual who posed the question and they offered some helpful tips like, stop pursuing comfort, and start pursuing fulfillment. Several participated in water aerobics and walked almost daily, while others echoed exercising often, learning a new language, remaining creative, and challenging their brains with new things. The common denominator…don’t lead a sedentary life.
I think this person’s question applies to anyone at any age. When you stop growing and developing, you become stale, complacent, complicit, unproductive, old, irrelevant, and begin dying faster. I try to make sure I avoid unnecessary stress that will tether me mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. It is imperative to continue to grow and go as long as you can.
There are always things that can weigh on us and slow our roll for living a productive life, like experiencing an illness or facing a debilitating circumstance. Oftentimes, we can become a little overwhelmed by occurrences in life, making us slow down or shut down. It is natural to slow down as we grow older, but that does not give us the license to come to a complete stop and never start up again. Nope, we can’t rewind the hands of time, but we can utilize our time by not wasting precious moments of usefulness and intensifying the will to live, I mean really live!
