Marina Cantacuzino: Let’s leave ‘evil’ out of the Anders Breivik case – Commentators – Voices – The Independent

Any of us who attempt to understand evil may be accused, as indeed Gitta Sereny was, of forgiving evil. However, the struggle is not with forgiving but with empathising while maintaining moral integrity. Stephen Cherry, in his fascinating book Healing Agony (Re-Imagining Forgiveness), gets to the heart of the matter when he concludes: “In order to empathise with the cruel and heartless you have to imagine being cruel and heartless yourself.” To realise that evil isn’t so different from us can be a terrifying place to visit. However, since identification and empathy are also given to the victims, therein lies the restorative process.

USAID funds Ebola ‘smart pod’ project

Sharmila Anandasabapathy, director of Baylor Global Initiatives and the Baylor Global Innovation Center emphasized both the time and cost efficiency of the ESP.

“Compared to a stand-alone hospital, you’re talking two weeks [for it to be deployed] as opposed to potentially nine to 12 months,” Anandasabapathy said. “For cost, I think it would be between 1/10th and 1/20th the cost, depending on the facility.”

Each ESP medical unit will be equipped with eight beds, an air filtration system, air conditioning and a contained waste management system. It will also come with a set of clinical training apps that would show how to properly use the ESP. Once a request to deploy an ESP comes in, a team could have it in the field and operating in two weeks.

“Like Legos, you can put multiple containers together so you can go from an eight-bed unit to a 16-bed unit very quickly,” Anandasabapthy said. ‘You can develop individual units for waste management that can be attached to larger units, but we hope that at full scale, we could build a 100-bed hospital in a month.”

Give Greece Room to Maneuver – NYTimes.com

Greece’s lenders, most notably Germany, insist that they are defending important principles: a country must pay its debts, and the long-term success of the euro depends on everyone abiding by the rules.

That might sound fine in principle, but it rejects reality when the country and the euro are at stake, as they are in the negotiations between Greece and the 18 other eurozone governments, which came to a grinding halt on Monday. The dangerous possibility of a Greek default and a crisis in the euro system have become very real.

Crow and Raven

As tricksters, Crow and Raven were both generous and shamelessly dishonest, cunning and foolish, brave and ridculous, greedy and resourceful. A fire-bringer story from the Lenape people of Pennsylvania, popularized in the children’s book, Rainbow Crow, tells of Crow’s loss of her beautiful plumage and voice when she is burned while bringing fire to the freezing creatures of earth. The people known as the Crow take their identity from the absaroka, an extinct raven-like bird of the western plains.
