Your silence will not protect you from Donald Trump – voting is imperative: Rhonda Y. Williams (Opinion) | cleveland.com

This election year is so much bigger than this election. It is about what kind of society we want to live in, and what kind of human beings we want to be.To be sure, the responsibility to vote, voice, and act won’t end after Nov. 8, but let’s get some hard practice in now. After all, think about what low voter turnout might actually get us? In the words of poet-activist Audre Lorde: “Your silence will not protect you.” Indeed, it just may cause us inexorable harm.

Iceland: northern lights replace street lights in Reykjavik | World news | The Guardian

Street lighting in Reykjavik has been switched off for an hour to give residents of the Icelandic capital a better view of the aurora borealis. Most parts of the world’s northernmost capital city, including the centre, went dark from 10pm on Wednesday.“Residents are invited to join in by turning out the lights at home so as to maximise the darkness and minimise light pollution,” the local government said in a statement. The aurora borealis, or northern lights, are multicoloured natural illuminations caused by interactions between solar winds and the Earth’s magnetic field.Posts on social media showed the colourful lights filling the night sky above the city.

A Single Migration From Africa Populated the World, Studies Find – The New York Times

They found that the ancestors of the KhoiSan, hunter-gatherers living today in southern Africa, began to split off from other living humans about 200,000 years ago and were fully isolated by 100,000 years ago. That finding hints that our ancestors already had evolved behaviors seen in living humans, such as language, 200,000 years ago.

I do not condemn ISIS – sister-hood magazine. A Fuuse production by Deeyah Khan. “Word!”

My dear fellow human beings, I have decided that I will not be condemning ISIS or any similar-minded groups in anyway anymore. I’m as distant from them as respectful Christian human beings are from the Christian militias in Africa, as respectful Jewish human beings are from the Israeli military, and as respectful Buddhist human beings are from the Buddhist militias in Myanmar. I will not be exonerating my name, my religion, or my ethnicity. This is the argument of the weak, the defenseless, and the doubtful. Although I share aspects of my identity with these criminals, it doesn’t make me one of them, defenseless before accusing looks nor doubtful about my beliefs. It simply assures me of how profoundly different these aspects of our faith and identity are. If I should ever be in a situation where I’m demanded to condemn any group that’s seemingly affiliated with me in anyway, I’ll be guiltlessly condemning all forms of evil and terror in this world. So, yes, I’m sorry for all the dead and the injured regardless of who inflicted this sad fate upon them. And for anyone who’s looking for a Muslim condemnation of ISIS and similar militias, you may quote me on that last sentence.

‘Healthy Ohio’ plan not healthy for Ohio: Wendy Patton, Policy Matters Ohio (Opinion) | cleveland.com

People could be kicked out for non-payment and locked out until they pay the debt. The Ohio Hospital Association fears higher costs due to administrative complexity. The plan is so problematic that 99 percent of the 956 comments submitted to the state about “Healthy Ohio” opposed key provisions of the proposal. The largest number of comments came from Ohioans worried about their own care: people with rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes, parents with mentally ill or developmentally disabled children. The next largest group of commenters was health-care providers: doctors, dentists, psychologists, hospitals, physician groups and free clinics. Advocates for vulnerable groups – youth in foster care, domestic violence victims, people with breast cancer — submitted comments. The concern of the faith community was enormous.

Dolphins sit out anthem after police union says they have forfeited free speech | Sport | The Guardian

Foster has dismissed criticism of the protests. “They say it’s not the time to do this,” Foster said last week. “When is the time? It’s never the time in somebody else’s eye, because they’ll always feel like it’s good enough. And some people don’t. That’s the beautiful thing about this country. If somebody feels it’s not good enough, they have that right. That’s all we’re doing, exercising that right.”The Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has said he supports his players’ stands. “I don’t think it was any lack of respect. I think everybody here — our team and our whole organization — respects the flag and what it stands for, and the soldiers and everything,” he said. “But these guys are making a conversation of something that’s a very important topic in this country, and I’m 100% supportive of them.”The Broward Sheriff’s Office have made no comment on the union’s requests but Miami-Dade police, who also provide security at Dolphins games, said they had no intention to change their policies. “[The department] have contractual obligations with Hard Rock Stadium to provide public safety. The safety of our residents and visitors is our primary concern,” it said in a statement.
