Incredible journey: one wolf’s migration across Europe | Henry Nicholls | Science | The Guardian

Slavc is a wolf. In 2011, he began an epic 2,000 kilometre migration across Europe from Slovenia to Italy via the Austrian Alps. Several months earlier, he had been fitted with a collar that allowed his movements to be tracked in incredible detail. I talked to Hubert Potočnik, the biologist whose work made this possible

10 Traits of the Bad Witch. | Rebelle Society

No matter how toned-down you allow yourself to be in dress or demeanor, you still make people nervous just by your very presence. There are things that can be done to mitigate this, but it’s probably unavoidable.

For folks who are looking to external authorities to tell them what’s good and beautiful and okay, the presence of you — someone who is wholly reliant on inner authority — is inherently disturbing.

Your presence is disturbing because others can sense there’s something about you that’s unpredictable and uncontrollable. You’re not being ruled by the conventional programs, so you’re not immediately legible to people who still allow themselves to be ruled.

From O’Connell Street to Instagram

Was once watching television with an ancient photo of my grandmother taken a year before she died in 1914. Nothing good on so I was surfing the TV. Stopped on a documentary on TB in New York City. They were talking about the first modern treatment center built Saranac Lake by a NYC doctor. Edison visited it and took an early film of it. When I heard Saranac Lake I paid closer attention, as the halting camera focused on a woman sitting on the veranda. There sat my grandmother, 80 years ago alive, and she sat next to me in a portrait photo taken in the same dress. Amazing photography along with drawing and painting – the original time machine!

matteringsofmind

No one is really sure on the numbers, but it was recently estimated that of all the pictures ever taken around the world over the last 200 years, fifty percent of them were shot last year. This is not so surprising when you consider that there are 1.5 billion smart phones in use today each with a digital camera built in. Over 200,000 pictures are uploaded to face book every minute of every day.

Standing on my desk is a silver frame that houses a small black and white grainy photograph that I took of my long departed mother on the beach in Tramore, Ireland nearly 40 years ago. Every day that I look at it the more distant, Scan0029the more faded it looks. I took the picture and presumably 11 others on a cheap box brownie camera, although what they were of and where those others are is lost…

Did You Get The Call? | Rebelle Society

DelRita Butler

Did you get the call?

I did.

Did you hear your name

in the middle of the night?

That voice egging you on,

nudging you to awaken.

The silent alarm vibrating

through your heart,

bursting your confusion,

this nameless knowing.

This tumult

of soul seeking truths

Are there words

for this disposition?

Come out,

add to the dialog

this hiding no longer suits you.

You’re on the brink

of transformation

and you need to jump in

or defy gravity,

and float

into the collective

of indie souls.

Or, into the cast

of nameless and

unidentified

seekers of change,

your new family.

So go out.

Be the change.

By doing,

sharing,

creating.

Walk the walk

and talk the talk

in your gifted way,

your language.

Paint the story,

write the story,

sing, dance,

play the story.

Pass it on,

teach it, grow it,

word by word,

by mouth.

Be the person

you want to be.

Be the person

you need to be.

Take your hat off.

Sit down

and journal this pause.

Put on sneakers,

grab a towel,

and run this moment.

Pick up your mat,

find space,

and meditate this moment.

But however you do

what you do,

carry someone with you,

forward.

Talk to them,

touch them,

share fears,

share joys,

speak ideas.

Collectively we cannot

effect change by only watching.

We are the town criers.

Jimmy Carter: World powers should rethink approach to Hamas | Maan News Agency

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Former US president Jimmy Carter said in an op-ed Monday that in order for the Israel-Gaza status quo to change, the international community needs to recognize Hamas as a “legitimate political actor.”

“Hamas cannot be wished away, nor will it cooperate in its own demise,” an op-ed written by Carter and former Irish president Mary Robinson said.

“Only by recognizing its legitimacy as a political actor — one that represents a substantial portion of the Palestinian people — can the West begin to provide the right incentives for Hamas to lay down its weapons,” the op-ed, published in Foreign Policy, said.

“Ever since the internationally monitored 2006 elections that brought Hamas to power in Palestine, the West’s approach has manifestly contributed to the opposite result.”

Carter and Robinson called for an “partial lifting” of the eight-year-old blockade on the Gaza Strip, and said an international force should be put into place to monitor border crossings.

The presence of an international force is also necessary to hold both sides accountable for ceasefire violations, they said.

The op-ed was also heavily critical of the Israeli army’s handling of its offensive on Gaza.

“There is no humane or legal justification for the way the Israeli Defense Forces are conducting this war,” the op-ed said.

“Hundreds of Palestinian noncombatants have been killed. Much of Gaza has lost access to water and electricity completely. This is a humanitarian catastrophe.”

The op-ed also noted “unacceptable” actions by Hamas, but stressed that while Gaza militants have killed three civilians, the vast majority of the 1,875 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces throughout the assault have been civilians.

Both Carter and Robinson are members of the Elders, a non-governmental organization that describes itself as a group of “independent global leaders working together for peace and human rights.”

Carter is among the most notable American public figures to criticize Israeli policy toward Palestinians. He is the author of “Peace Not Apartheid,” a book for which he has earned praise for its frank speech about Israel and Palestine. Some key American figures, however, accuse him of being biased against Israel.

A Practice of Gratitude. | Rebelle Society

Take that gratitude and write it, speak it, dance it, paint it. Let it shine bright, for you and for all of us. So that when darkness falls, this thank you is the salve on your wounded knees, the balm for my broken heart, the friend who holds us all during aching times of loneliness.

Be gratitude.

Is there a Rihanna sex tape? No, it’s a malware scam on Facebook | Technology | The Guardian

There is no sex tape of Rihanna and her boyfriend doing the rounds online. You can’t see who’s been looking at your Facebook profile. And you can’t change your Facebook colour either.

This may all sound obvious, but according to antivirus firm Bitdefender, these are the most popular malware scams on the social network in 2014.

The company has published a list of the top 10 Facebook scams, with the fake app promising to tell you your Facebook views and visitors by far the most popular, accounting for 30.2% of bogus links it identified on the social network this year.

Clicking on any of them will lead Facebook users to sites that try to install viruses on their computers, as malware developers continue to seek new ways to spread their software to unsuspecting victims.

The chart is good news for Taylor Swift and Disneyland, who both featured in Bitdefender’s list a year ago. Swift’s non-existent sex tape and an offer of a free trip to Disneyland have fallen from the top 10 over the last 12 months.

“Why do people still want to see who has been taking a peek at their profile, despite all security warnings? I think they believe these are legitimate apps,” said chief security strategist Catalin Cosoi.

“This is social engineering at its finest – a challenging mental game that pushes the right psychological buttons. The baits have changed over time, with stalkers, peekers, admirers, overly attached girlfriends and exes haunting you, but the reason this scam works is simple: human nature.”
