Syria’s Suheir Atassi

Millions of women around the world do this daily without attracting much attention, but recently, Suhair Atassi, a prominent, secular Syrian opposition figure was spotted wearing a swimsuit at a Turkish resort. When photos of her appeared in social media, a vicious campaign, mainly in Arabic, was unleashed.

It was shocking and painful to read the comments on Twitter by many, both men and women, pro and anti-Syrian regime, pro and anti Islamic State, openly insulting Atassi and describing her with disgusting descriptions. It was as if Atassi’s body became a unifying figure for most Syrians, regardless of political stances. They indulged in demonizing and demeaning her, with varying arrays of excuses.

Global Patriarchy and Sexism : A reflection on Arab Drama in Ramadan

Truth and self-reflection is never easy – Nadia is doing all a favor in sharing her journey.

Global patriarchy and sexism

Ramadan is official declared as the month of worship and meditation and of course fasting from food. Practically, it is the month of eating greedily and watching the racing Arab drama 30 days series.
Being part of the tradition of this practice, I try to come out with some wisdom of the naturally unhealthy tradition. I admit it feels sedative. Like being drugged on probably low effect drugs. Something that controls the mind, focus, and even emotions through the TV screen. An act of a continuous mesmerized up and down emotions that continues throughout the series. It is like taking real life issues for a vacation in this month. Well, practicality is not bad after all. I have come to realize in this month that Media in its TV and Film industry is like religion to people. IF Marx lived in this generation, he would have…

#In the Shadows of Men

As honest as one can get! Brava!

Love without adoration is like a matchstick. It ignites but does not give warmth, and if its spark is not put to a fuse or a candle, it extinguishes and has no use.

The rush of love, the flurry of the heart, the fumbling to be perfect… this is our experience in love. Therefore it is not easy to accept failure after such intense emotion. But this is life, I always try to remind myself. That now-distant person once shared moments with me that filled me with love and life. Even my ex-husband. I shared with him many beautiful moments … as well as the worst moments. The hardening of our emotions was brutal. A love that size can turn dry and stale.

The worst thing that can happen in relationships is the feeling of failure over what was once a major excitement. At first, our hearts burst with…
