The Independence Olympics, Mario Deane and Ministers’ Words: Jamaica, Saturday August 6, 2016 — Petchary’s Blog

Happy Independence Day to all who are celebrating! It’s very quiet in Kingston, but no doubt a few parties will break out later on. I was happy to attend a “Rae Town Oldies” party at the residence of the Spanish Chargée d’Affaires two days ago, which was huge fun (and, of course wonderful oldies in […]

Syria… the ongoing bleed of the Nakba

People who have been marginalized for centuries under the rule of foreign and domestic empires must overcome the fear of their neighbors before they see the light of their spirit is the same as everyone’s.

I was scrolling into Facebook news today, and a post saying stopped me, “ Aleppo is liberated”. I asked who liberated what? And I got the answer of: It is the free army liberating it from the army of Assad.”

In the morning I was talking to a Syrian friend who woke up on a post of his nephew in Aleppo saying that they are moving out. “ But I was thinking they already moved to this house because it was safe last year”. He told me with worries filling the tone of his voice.

I spent a whole week with Syrian friends in Cairo upon my last visit, which probably made me confront my emotions towards what is happening in Syria. I have tried to block my emotions from feeling the huge amount of this human catastrophe, thinking there is nothing to be done. Each scene reminds me of…

Shame on us what is happening in Syria

Calling Bullshit

First you Survive/ Then you Thrive

Calling bullshit on All Lives Matter is very difficult because those who need that want to ignore inequality in society.
Cognitive dissonance, white privilege and ignorance is a hellacious cocktail.
Fundamentally, those who spout All Lives Matter in response to demands for change, is a plea to maintain the status quo. Whatever else they fear the loss of whatever unfair advantage they enjoy.

A level playing field doesn’t help everyone or so they think.

Just as the Blue Lives Matter advocates demand the right to engage in police brutality in the same breath that they demonize those who call for the end of police brutality.

Who in their right mind opposes a movement that demands justice and an end to murder? How is that a hate group? What type of person supports murder?
