Standing Rock protesters will not follow official directive to leave camps | US news | The Guardian

At a press conference, Standing Rock Sioux tribal leader Dave Archambault and other protest organizers confidently explained that they would stay at the Oceti Sakowin camp and continue with nonviolent protests, a day after Archambault received a letter from the US army corps of engineers that said all federal lands north of the Cannonball river would be closed to public access 5 December over “safety concerns”.The corps cited the coming winter and increasingly contentious clashes between protesters – who believe the pipeline could harm drinking water and Native A

In Madagascar Test, Drone Delivers Medicine by Air – The New York Times

Speeding Madagascar Health Care by Air

By Heidi HutnerLast summer, Stony Brook University’s Global Health Institute teamed up with Vayu, Inc., a Michigan start-up developing drones aiding medical care, to test aerial shipments of blood and fecal samples and drugs between remote villages in Madagascar and Centre ValBio, the university’s biological research center adjacent to a national park.Parasitic diseases, tuberculosis and a range of other life-threatening illnesses are common among the Malagasy population. But many people live in remote and inaccessible areas. In Ifanadiana, the district where the drone flights took place, travel to medical facilities can take a day or more by foot, across treacherous terrain.“Often, the sick don’t want to walk long distances, they don’t want to leave their children behind and, in many cases, they associate hospitals with bad outcomes and death,” said Dr. Peter M. Small, who heads the university’s health institute and was formerly deputy director of the Tuberculosis Delivery Program for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Thanksgiving began to spread liberal values. Let’s keep that going | James Nevius | Opinion | The Guardian

The Pilgrims became the de facto founders of America at the expense of all others. Even a casual perusal of the facts would have pointed to Jamestown, Virginia, as the first English colony, as well as to earlier Spanish settlements. Even the Dutch were trading in Manhattan before the Pilgrims embarked on the Mayflower. But that history was erased in favor of the Pilgrims, whose abolitionist descendants had prevailed in the civil war. So at your Thanksgiving table this year, when your guests try to normalize “alt-right” politics, or if talk turns approvingly toward a Muslim ban or wall-building, keep this in mind: they are violating the spirit of the holiday – history and Sarah Josepha Hale are on your side. At my house, we’ll be raising a toast to Hale and her belief that Thanksgiving should be a charitable day of “benevolence of action” and that “every American home” be a “place of plenty and of rejoicing”. It’s a worthy sentiment, and I’m with her. But if you mention Trump at my table, you’re still risking a pie to the face.

Giving Thanks #thanksgiving

penned in moon dust

red-fall

With open hands tho little here

I offer thanks this time of year

tho seasons change and winds grow cold

there’s warmth in smiles of young and old

kindled kindness shared with all

warmly given every fall

gifts of heart like waters flow

from these pools love can grow

foul the water where anger prevails

no tears can quench harsh travails

come look up on bended knee

bountiful is God’s beauty

Today in the United States we celebrate Thanksgiving. It may to some be represented in the food eaten but in our hearts it is for the freedoms we enjoy.

Behind the Elevator #poetry #photography

penned in moon dust

hall

Beckoned to the mystery

something I might dread

there has to be something

behind the hallway of my head

my finger shudders, lingers

on THE button slowly now

once I press it “Open”

“Close” may not be allowed

my hand makes the decision

reason swirls with dismay

one thing I can tell you

I’ll never be the same

If I told you what I found there

you’d be in a tangle too

but I signed a special paper

you’ll wish in part you knew

the question now arises

where am I am I not

if you knew the answer

you’d stand to lose alot

Wishing all the Poet’s United folks a happy Wednesday and Happy Thanksgiving (for those who are celebrating) and thanks Sumana for the prompt “Hyperbole.”
