You might wonder how a critically acclaimed but relatively unknown singer-songwriter recruited Adele, Pearl Jam and Dolly Parton to cover her songs for a benefit album. But the biggest get on Brandi Carlile’s “Cover Stories,” made up of new renditions of the material on her 2007 album, “The Story,” comes from outside the music world: Barack Obama. The former president doesn’t sing on the album, from which all proceeds will benefit War Child UK, an organization dedicated to supporting children affected by conflict. But he did provide a foreword for the package (out Friday on Legacy Recordings), in which he writes that “Brandi Carlile tells stories that encourage us to see ourselves in one another” and that she “reminds us that, together, we can build for our children a more just, peaceful world.”“The Story” has been a slow-burn tale of success. Its songs have turned up in numerous television shows and commercials, and the title track has become something of a staple on singing competition shows like “The Voice”; this year, a decade after its release, the album was certified gold. (Ms. Carlile is currently on a small tour on which she is playing the album in its entirety, an anniversary celebration she described as “more of a party environment.”)On the phone from her home outside Seattle, Ms. Carlile, 35, said she was unsure why the record had had such staying power — “I’m as confused as you are!” — but had become aware that “people were singing it still, and it wasn’t going away, so it seemed like the biggest thing I had to throw at this.”

Abortion Is a Fundamentally Democratic Party Issue | Dame Magazine
If we want to truly end the tidal wave of misogynistic restrictions that abortion opponents continue to ride through state legislatures and now, the federal government, we cannot stigmatize that which we’re supposed to be supporting.
Are you a Democrat? Then you need to support safe and legal abortion, not because the party requires uniformity of thought, but because supporting basic human and constitutional rights is a Democratic prerequisite.
Abandon abortion, and we abandon you. {I agree 100%}

Wow, I am SO angry about the passage of Zombie Trumpcare
Someone you know – a child, a son, a daughter, a cousin, a grandchild, a grandmother, a sister, an uncle or aunt… will die if the the #ProDeathParty, the GOP gets this to #LoserTrump to sign into law!
I am so angry right now.
I have been wanting to get back in the groove of blogging regularly because I miss it, and I’d cleared off this evening with the explicit goal of writing a post. I was all set to write a post about my first-ever DNF, which happened this weekend, when I heard the House Republicans had forced through the legislative monstrosity some like to refer to as Zombie Trumpcare.
And since then, I haven’t been able to think about much else.
There’s so much to be angry about. I don’t even know where to begin! Can we talk about how now, what’s defined as a pre-existing condition means that basically every woman alive is a walking pre-existing condition? If you’ve ever been raped, abused by a partner, suffered post-partum depression, had an eating disorder – surprise! You have a pre-existing condition.
I can’t tell you…

Report: Judge signs off on two warrants in Trump- Russia scandal | 3CHICSPOLITICO
It’s worth emphasizing again that these warrants may or may not be arrest warrants, so they may not imminently result in the kind of action that the public can see. But with this much smoke now emanating from reliable places around the Trump-Russia grand jury story, it would be increasingly difficult to make the argument at this point that there isn’t fire. And it raises the question of why corporate news outlets like CNN aren’t bothering to dig in and report on the grand jury story, even as many of these same news outlets have instead spent the week harping on Hillary Clinton’s emails of all things.

Who’s Afraid of a Changing World Order? | DQ-en – Danny Quah
The form that Asia’s soft-power story will take remains a work in progress: Asia’s intellectuals still need to forge that vision. In some circumstances, networks can usefully replace multilateral agreements. In many situations, a duties-based social understanding can perfectly substitute for a rights-based one. Reverence for learning and scholarship is not a Western monopoly. Gentle pluralism beats arrogant universalism. And that fetishism that for creativity one needs space to rebel, flies in the face of all manner of important disciplined scientific investigation. All these sit easily with and, indeed, are on ample offer in Asia.
- But certain other things need to be excluded right away from Asia’s narrative. When Trump and his circle display xenophobia, racism, anti-Islamic policies, nationalist populism, and an extreme zero-sum mentality, Asia needs to NOT say, “We see no problem with that.”
- When Trump undermines the free press and subverts America’s democratic institutions or America’s judiciary, Asia can NOT say, “We are okay with Trump and his people doing those things; we have the same problems here. “ Asia must NOT say, “Let’s focus on Trump’s business acumen and deal-making instincts” – for that too is what Asia knows best and likes most.
- These ideas have no place in Asia’s soft power narrative; Asia must categorically reject them.
- Otherwise, Asia has no story.
Key findings about U.S. immigrants | Pew Research Center

About 1 million immigrants arrive in the U.S. each year. In 2015, the top country of origin for new immigrants coming into the U.S. was India, with 110,000 people, followed by Mexico (109,000), China (90,000) and Canada (35,000).By race and ethnicity, more Asian immigrants than Hispanic immigrants have arrived in the U.S. each year since 2010. Immigration from Latin America slowed following the Great Recession, particularly from Mexico, which has seen net losses in U.S. immigration over the past few years.Asians are projected to become the largest immigrant group in the U.S. by 2055, surpassing Hispanics. In 2065, Pew Research Center estimates indicate that Asians will make up some 38% of all immigrants, Hispanics 31%, whites 20% and blacks 9%.

To Everyone I Gave My Power To: I’d Like It Back Now. | Rebelle Society
From now on, my energy, my source of light, my power and strength will remain solely in me. I will still reach out and help care for you, listen when you need someone to talk to, hold you if you need to cry, and share in laughter that makes our sides hurt. But that is where it is going to end. I am not going to worry about your comments, second glances, critical words or looks.
I am not going to take on your problems as mine, or your goals and dreams as mine.I’m taking my power back. I’m going to bottle up all of my strength and energy, and focus internally until I can remember all of the dreams that I let disappear. Until I can feel my own talents bubbling up out of my fingertips. Until I feel like I am choking on love, beauty, and happiness when I can feel the love for me rise up in my chest.
I have given you enough of my strength to help you shine, but I’m going to take it back now so I can become my own sun.
