MERS in KSA: Age Distribution

Age alone seems a huge factor and any health challenges already existing – double down!

Mens et Manus

Last week, I took another (more informed) shot at exploring the relationship between comorbidity and mortality among MERS cases – both during this spring’s outbreak and prior to it. I ended the post by promising further insight into two potential confounders – age & sex. We’ll start our discussion on age here today… But I present the following information with a very important caveat. Earlier this week, 113 previously unannounced cases (and 92 deaths) were added to the KSA MERS tally – but we don’t know much about them yet. Because of this, I couldn’t include these newly reported cases in the analysis below; when we learn more about them, I’ll revisit and revise as necessary. The situation is constantly changing and what we think we know now may be flipped on its head come the morning!

With this in mind, let’s now take a closer look at the age…

A Republican World – ‘Texas Republican Party Drafts New Platform Advocating For Ex-Gay Therapy’

The Last Of The Millenniums

Next week, the platform will have Christianity as the only ‘true’ religion in America.

And the week after that, you must be white to vote.

And the week after that……

VOTE.

Or have the ‘small government’ Republicans tell us how we will live.

‘Earlier this week, the Dallas Voice reported that the Texas Republican Party had stripped language from its platform that claimed that “homosexuality tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family,” but the Houston Chronicle now reports that the language has been replaced with a different kind of condemnation’.

  • “Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable alternative lifestyle, in public policy, nor should family be redefined to include homosexual couples”.
  • “We believe there should be no granting of special legal entitlements or creation of special status for homosexual behavior, regardless of state of origin”.
  • “Additionally, we oppose any criminal or civil penalties…

The Essence of Being Two-Faced and a Sunshine Patriot

All these folks now think rescuing an American soldier is terrible. Is it because President Obama did it?

Sarah Palin in 2009:

“Todd and I are praying for Private First Class Bowe Bergdahl, his family, and all of his fellow soldiers who are putting their lives on the line to defend our freedom and protect democracy abroad,” Governor Palin said. “The capture of Private Bergdahl and the bombings in Jakarta prove that we have not defeated terrorism, and that radical extremists will stop at nothing to attack Westerners and our ideals.”

Kelly Ayotte, January 2014:

This June will mark five years since Bowe Bergdahl was captured by the Taliban. After so long in captivity, DoD must redouble its efforts to find Sergeant Bergdahl and return him safely to his family,” Ayotte wrote in a letter this week to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

Oliver North, 2011 Facebook post:

Today, I received from the National League of POW/MIA Families, a “Never Forget Bracelet” emblazoned with the name of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. He was seized on June 30, 2009 in Afghanistan and is being held by the Haqqani Organization – a Taliban afilliated terrorist group – in northwest Pakistan. Sgt Bergdahl and his loved ones here at home deserve our prayers and encouragement until he is rescued or released. That’s what we do. We’re Americans.

Jim Inhofe, June 2013:

Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, an American soldier, was taken prisoner by the Taliban-aligned Haqqani network while deployed to Afghanistan in June 2009.  Sen. Inhofe supported this amendment that raises awareness of SGT Bergdahl’s capture to continue to maximize efforts to return him and reminds the Senate of one of the basic pillars of the Army’s Warrior Ethos: ‘I will never leave a fallen comrade.’

Inhofe added, “The mission to bring our missing Soldiers home is one that will never end. It’s important that we make every effort to bring this captured Soldier home to his family.”

Duncan Hunter, early 2014:

“Given the significance and necessity for centralized command and control, which I have been informed is little to nonexistent, I urge you to seriously consider the idea of directing an individual to organize, manage and coordinate activity that involves multiple elements of the federal government working toward Bergdahl’s release,” wrote Hunter, a Marine veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mitch McConnel and Pat Toomey, April 2014:

no member of the armed forces who is missing in action or captured should be left behind.

I’m sure there are many more out there scrubbing their websites at this very moment.

UPDATE:

National Review, Reihan Salam, September 2013:  the Administration’s proposal to free five Taliban detainees at Guantánamo in exchange for the release of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl is an example of “acts of selfless statesmanship”.

Pajama’s Media, January 2014: Report that  Bergdahl’s father was circulating a petition asking the Obama administration to “take action to secure the release, or rescue, or Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, using all means available, including force.” – with link so that PJ Media readers could add their names.

Here is an editorial in the Wall Street Journal from July 2011 looking forward to the day when Bergdahl – despite the “murky” circumstances of his capture – gets to lead an independence day parade.

The men Obama has abandoned
Written by Allen West on December 10, 2013

President Obama is in South Africa for his self-gratifying opportunity to get before cameras for the funeral of Nelson Mandela and shake Raul Castro’s hand. As we wrote Sunday evening, seems that British PM Margaret Thatcher was not deserving of his time or attention.

It got me thinking of others who seemingly do not deserve President Obama’s time or attention. In the military we live by a code that defines our commitment to each other, an undying devotion of “Leave no Man Behind.”

Then there is Army SGT Bowe Bergdahl still held by the Islamic terrorist Haqqani network, probably in Pakistan, in the same place where Osama Bin Laden was hiding. This past POW/MIA national day of recognition, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel reiterated a pledge to secure the young Army NCO being held captive, but have there been any actions? Any time, attention, or even mention from the Commander-in-Chief? Nah, no camera highlights in it for him.

Boko Haram slaughters hundreds

{AP report – true or not, it sounds like a scene from film Tears of the Sun. The killing has to stop.}

After the militants forced everyone into the village centers, “they began to shout `Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar,’ then they started to fire at the people continuously for a very long time until all who had gathered were dead,” he said. Allahu akbar means God is great.

The killings took place in the villages of Danjara, Agapalwa, and Antagara, part of Gwoza district in Borno state. The community leader said he fled to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, adding that some who escaped the massacre crossed into the neighboring country of Cameroon while others remain trapped in the mountainous region.

“They still see the gunmen going about attacking villages and hamlets by setting them on fire,” he said.
