I’VE BEEN THINKING

keithgarrettpoetry

I thought i’d call to you and talk awhile,

I’m sitting here alone, I’ve been thinking.

What can i do to make this world a better place,

Let go of anger and sometimes terrible thoughts.

Do not waste this time that I’ve been given,

Smile and say hello to a passerby.

Lend a hand to a less fortunate soul,

Put a little trust in man, this I’ve been told.

Do not take a life, be there for a friend,

Teach a child right from wrong.

Love as much as you can, hate is not a gift in hand,

Do not steal or act in violence,

I’ve been thinking god, I just needed you to listen.

Head of paedophile inquiry’s own brother accused of protecting VIP paedophiles

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the UK today)

There has been some criticism of Theresa May’s decision to appoint Lady Butler-Sloss as chair of the VIP paedophile inquiry.

Most of the criticism has centred around the fact Lady Butler-Sloss sits in the House of Lords and may have to criticise her fellow peers in the inquiry.

Personally, I think much more worrying is the little mentioned fact that Butler-Sloss will most certainly have to investigate a close member of her own family.

Her brother is former Tory MP and Attorney General Sir Michael Havers – who also happened to be one of the establishment figures alleged to have argued for the protection of the identities of VIPs accused of child abuse.

But don’t just take my word for it.

Just 4 days ago – before it was announced Butler-Sloss would head the inquiry – the pro-establishment Daily Mail had this to say about Havers:

Order of Melchizedek

Steve A. Wiggins

WhyPriests?A considered reflection from a long-time believer is a force never to be taken lightly. Garry Wills is a lifelong Catholic and an intellectual. His book, Why Priests? A Failed Tradition, was recommended to me by a friend and it is indeed a book that raises most profound questions. To someone born Protestant, such as the current writer, many of the arguments Wills marshals are strangely familiar. Many were lobbed in Fundamentalist harangues where clergy that believe in a literal six-day creation proved surprisingly adroit at finding the chinks in Catholic armor. The New Testament says nothing about the Christian movement having its own priests. And even the explicit command that seems to have come from Jesus—call no man father—is immediately reversed once priests become a fixture in a priestless faith. Wills explores the origins of these practices not to tear apart the religion of which he remains a…

Afifa Aza: There’s More to Life Than Just Getting By

Petchary's Blog

“People are leaving here, because it’s not livable. I want to make it livable.”

I often see Afifa Aza in our favorite café in Kingston, perched at a table with headphones on her ears. She has a self-deprecating smile and tufty hair. She is an artist – an artist who is also an activist. She wants to “guide ideas,” to help them grow. And to help Jamaica grow into a living, breathing, vibrant, inclusive society – so that people will not want to leave. She doesn’t want them to leave (and nor do I). So, we sat down and talked, recently, in our favorite café.

Afifa Aza says she is "grounded in an African/Rastafarian spirituality." Afifa Aza is “grounded in an African/Rastafarian spirituality.”

Afifa is the co-founder (with feminist Georgia Love, who is an active member of Women’s Media Watch) of two alternative spaces – for art, learning, culture, growth, dialogue. One is SO((U))L HQ, in Stony Hill, just…

Witness: Ivorian woman pushed off 6th floor for demanding salary

Noted – not liked – Lebanon is not the only nation to abuse contract workers but… it should not even be on the list and perhaps it will less likely to also result in death if the state now takes tis seriously and brings the killer to justice. The photo of the dead woman, moments after being push to her death is graphic but so is the abuse daily of women in private.

Hummus For Thought

Ivory Coast-based Koaci.com has learned that a young Ivorian woman was found dead after having been reportedly pushed off the 6th floor of an apartment following a suspected feud with her sponsor concerning her salary payment. The following is an English translation of the original French which can be found here. A graphic image of the victim can be found at the end of the post. Viewer discretion is advised.

The text states:

“A young Ivorian woman of around 20 years old was found dead after having been reportedly pushed off the 6th floor of a building for demanding her salary in Beirut, Lebanon.

This was reported to Koaci.com by a young Cameroonian woman, after the revelations by her sister, who is a neighbor of the victim.

According to her neighbor, whose name can’t be revealed, the young victim was pushed out of the 6th floor of a building…

Loan sharks thank government for abolishing Local Welfare Assistance

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the UK today!)

All MPs will be receiving this excellent spoof letter next week, highlighting the fact that the main people who are going to benefit from the government’s decision to abolish Local Welfare Assistance, will be loan sharks:

loan sharks thank you letter

MPs will also be receiving pillow cases with the slogan “How do you sleep at night?

For more about the campaign to raise awareness of the impact of cutting Local Welfare Assistance – which funds essential furniture, electrical goods, food, rent deposits etc for vulnerable households at risk of homelessness or going through a crisis – see here.
