Those Worthless Lives Of The Middle East

No words – just tears and hopes to add.

A Separate State of Mind | A Blog by Elie Fares

Those worthless people of Gaza. How many have died since Tuesday? It doesn’t even matter but I’ll list the number anyway: 154, and those 154 people don’t matter. Some will chant praises to their martyrdom and others will lament how their lives were lost, but they are but a number in a conflict that won’t end, a number to be buried deep in the Arab subconscious between seasons of Arab Idol, Ahla Sot and Elissa’s albums. Gaza was still an open air prison a few years ago and it will remain an open air prison a few years from now. It’s just only remembered at specific instants when their going gets slightly tougher. We get infuriated at the hypocrisy that Israel killing Arabs includes when its entire existence can be taken back, in one way or another, to Western guilt over the Jewish holocaust. But when you come to think of…

Wandering

Night Owl Poetry - Dorinda Duclos

Wandering on
Through valleys wide
And forests oh so deep
Through wild flower lanes
This Earth can’t contain
And mountains oh so steep

Wandering again
Carefree and light
Like a child in a nursery rhyme
Away from the city
That shows you no pity
From sweltering heat and grime

Wandering still
My visions set free
There are no worries to blind me
I’ll take to the clouds
Thundering loud
And never look back behind me

Wandering ever
Til my heart is fulfilled
Breathing in nature’s pure scent
It is here I surrender
To take in the splendor
To live out my dreams quite content

Now that the World Cup is over, it is a good time to say what i have learnt and it is not about football. It is about what belongs to men and what belongs to women. Sports has a way of showing that divide sharply.

What i have learnt from CVM TV’s exclusive coverage of the FIFA World Cup is that football is for men. Football is the domain of men. For the entire duration of the competition, we had a male host with male commentators watching men play with occasional shots of their male coaches and one or two females in the audience crying laughing or cheering.( I am thinking more about how ideas of gender and sex function in postcolonial, colonial, neoliberal societies like ours.)

If you think about the recent motion passed in parliament by Senator Imani Duncan Pryce , to improve the representation of…

The Villages Group: Cooperation in Israel-Palestine

9.7.14

To our friends,

I have already been sitting for an hour, staring at the empty word page and not finding words that would describe the pain – the pain of those of us who see straight. The pain of the sober, of those who knew that the bottled demon grows and grows, and when it is let out, it will be unbearable. And it has been let out.

Last night I spoke with my good friend from Gaza. Over the phone he heard the din blast of the Gazan rockets that exploded near us, in an open field. At my end, I heard the Israeli bombing from the air near his home. We talked. He said: “You know what my dreamiest dream is? My dream is that still in my own lifetime I will be able to have coffee with you and your family (whom he knows personally from…
