Don’t buy it, make it: Charcoal briquette dehumidifier

repurposeful

Summer, with all its humid, hot glory, is just around the corner. If you have a section of your house, like the basement or the attic, that gets particularly damp during warmer weather, your home may be at risk for growing mold. One of the easiest solutions to help prevent dampness is a dehumidifier, but commercial dehumidifiers are pricey. Consider making your own dehumidifier with materials you likely already own.

Create a dehumidifier from charcoal briquettes

1. Find a suitable medium to large sized container with a lid, such as a coffee can, plastic container, painter’s bucket, etc.

2. Poke several holes in the lid of your container.

3. Fill your container with a handful of charcoal briquettes, and voilà, a homemade, cheap dehumidifier! For the most humid areas of your home, set out multiple dehumidifiers.

4. Replace the charcoal briquettes every few months with new…

ZEPHY

keithgarrettpoetry

Soft as a gentle kiss, a touch on the skin of a memory In the wind,

A soft breeze, a West wind blowing through the trees, across the sea.

Travels through the years, not a face does It wear as It whispers,

It can only be seen with eyes that dream, soft as It speaks.

It changes tides, moves past and around what In nature exists,

Night and day It will go from here and there, place to place.

It Is the Zephy, has been since the time of man,

Energy without form, created by god In heaven, when and how long ago.

For It no beginning, no ending as It howls through time, not seen but why,

Powerful as It Is with no body or soul, why does It know just where to go.?

WHERE WOULD WE GO?

Cincinnati – everything happens 10-20 years later there – Mark Twain

keithgarrettpoetry

The world is changing faster than ever, so fast,

In one hundred years faster than before our world began.

It does not grow or get bigger as more people and things are created,

We can’t escape what we have done between the good and bad.

Where would we go when there is no more room to roam,

Run fast and run far to nowhere in panicked crowds of doom.

Everything is closing in with no place to hide, land and sky,

Where would we go if ever anger grows to a point of no return.

The changing environment is a chain reaction throughout the lands,

When will we worry that we are at natures mercy, food supplies of no control.

Where would we go when there is nowhere to go?

US Peace Corps Pulling Volunteers Out of Ebola Epidemic Areas – With What Precautions?

Ebola is spread by people who have it and showing symptoms coming in contact with people as they travel, in hospital, at work, or at home.

People leaving an infected area should be screened before leaving and isolated, perhaps, when they arrive at new destination.

LA Times reports: The Peace Corps is removing more than 300 of its volunteers from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea as an Ebola outbreak that has left hundreds dead continues to worsen in West Africa.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Peace Corps said it is temporarily removing volunteers from the affected countries, and did not offer any comment on a possible return date.

The news came just days after two American charity workers contracted the disease in Monrovia, the Liberian capital. Patrick Sawyer, a 40-year-old consultant with the Liberian government, was also revealed to be the first American to die of the disease, relatives said Tuesday.

“The Peace Corps has enjoyed long partnerships with the government and people of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and is committed to continuing volunteers’ work there,” the statement read. “A determination on when volunteers can return will be made at a later date.”

Israel Shrinking Gaza Strip by 40 Percent

Why not just take the whole thing and drive them into the sea and say – “not our fault – Hamas made us do it!” Or why not build a huge moat and turn Gaza into an island? Or – no don’t stop reading just yet – how about sitting down with whomever wants to help and has a stake in world peace and humanity and talking peace. That way you can save money and your soul.

Against the Grain

Map courtesy of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

To protect itself from Hamas rockets and tunnels, Israel is forcing tens of thousands of people out of their homes, turning their old neighborhoods into a no-man’s land.

This narrow strip of land that used to be called “the Gaza Strip,” already one of the more densely populated places on Earth, is growing dramatically smaller. The Israeli military, relentlessly and methodically, is driving people out of the 3-kilometer (1.8 mile) buffer zone it says it needs to protect against Hamas rockets and tunnels. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the buffer zone eats up about 44 percent of Gaza’s territory.

What that means on the ground is scenes of extraordinary devastation in places like the Al Shajaya district approaching Gaza’s eastern frontier, and Beit Hanoun in the north. These were crowded…

Gracias!

How do you say… “shoe”?

Zapato

naturally we both point at our feet

under the table

the four-year old and me

How do you say… “smile”?

Sonrisa

the white teeth in upturned lips

fill the boy’s small face

a giggle slips

¿Como se dice… “hug”?

Abrazo

little arms reach up

wrap around my neck

as I bend in half

How do you say…It’s been a bit too long?

since I’ve felt little boy hugs

akin to puppy dog tails

 wagging with happy energy

¿Como se dice… “content”?

Estar Contento

blue-gray eyes radiate a glow

knowing that one moment spent with a child

causes my invisible tail to wag

there’s really no translation

One Man’s Trash – Back on ‘Neighborhood Watch – ‘George Zimmerman ‘patrolling’ Central Florida shop after gun theft’

One taste of infamy and he’s addicted for life to being infamous! Next step is ludicrous, or finally the jail he should be inside of as permanent guest.

‘Owner of Pompano Pat’s in DeLand says Zimmerman not working for him’

‘DeLAND, Fla. – ‘Although he’s not a hired security officer, George Zimmerman has been “patrolling” outside a Volusia County gun shop after it was recently robbed, according to the store owner’.

‘Pat Johnson told Local 6 that Zimmerman is not an employee of his DeLand store Pompano Pat’s, which sells firearms, ammunition and motorcycles’.

‘Johnson said that Zimmerman, on his own accord, has been spotted outside the store since the robbery earlier this month’.
