See just how batty the debate over immigration in the UK has become:

“If someone doesn’t bring some common sense to the immigration debate soon, the UK is in danger of becoming a laughing stock.” What? Is this a republished comment from last year?

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the UK today!)

On Question Time last week, Giles Fraser told a funny story which nicely illustrates how batty the whole discussion over immigration has become in the UK.

He said he’d got into a conversation with a taxi driver who told him he was so fed up with the number of foreigners coming to live and work in the UK he was going to move to Spain.

Well just in case anyone thought this kind of absurd opinion was a one-off – have a look at this recent survey by respected polling company ComRes.

When asked if all citizens of other European Union countries should have the right to live and work in the United Kingdom, just 36%of British people agreed.

But when asked whether British people should be free to live and work anywhere in the EU, 52%of British people agreed.

UKIP’s new friends in Europe: “disabled shouldn’t be seen on television”

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the UKIP!)

Here are a few quotes from the Polish KNP party – UKIP’s new friends in Europe:

“Democracy is the stupidest form of government ever conceived.”

“Women are dumber than men and should not be allowed to vote”

“Evolution has ensured that women are not too intelligent”

“The general public should not see the disabled on television” (during the 2012 Summer Paralympics)

“The European Commission building should be turned into a brothel.”

“Gays are a gang of louts imported from abroad.”

And here you can see the leader of the KNP Party – Janusz Korwin-Mikke – clearly using the word ‘n*ggers‘ in the European parliament:

.

Well done Nigel. You’ve just confirmed once and for all every accusation there has ever been of racism, sexism and homophobia against UKIP.

But of course, Farage will get into bed with anyone if £1 million of European Parliament gravy…

Bishops pull Pope’s welcome mat out from Gays and Divorcees: Editorial cartoon | cleveland.com

The AP reported Cardinal Wilfred Fox Napier of South Africa, protested that the first draft offering a warmer welcome was the work of one or two people.   He said that  made the Bishops “very angry”.     I believe those “two people”  are Pope Francis and Jesus of Nazareth.

Racism, Bigotry and Anarchy: How My Hometown Is Breeding ISIS

Wish again that there was a noted button and not just a like button. The behavior of self-appointed protectors is always about them overcoming their weakness and fear, not reality. Like extremists who believe God is so weak that God needs small minded fools for protection.

Welcome to Ebrine

The sign says: welcome to Ebrine. Huddled on a bunch of hills east of Batroun, my hometown is considered as one of the area’s largest. It is Maronite by excellence. The sign could have also said welcome to Maronistan and you’d still be within realms of accuracy.

Growing up, I never truly fit there but I liked it nonetheless. It was peaceful, serene, had amazing scenery and, at the time, I thought it provided everything that I needed. Little did I know that a whole spectrum existed beyond the realms of those 7 hills, 2000 voters and dozen Churches.

My hometown has also lately become a hub where Syrian refugees and workers have aggregated in substantial numbers, or at least as substantial a number can be to tick off the brains of townsfolk that I had thought were kind. I was wrong.

The argument went: “if those Syrians got slingshots…

New exhibit highlights struggle of Lebanese of African and Asian heritage

Global culture – deal with it, or be needlessly torn up by struggling against its spread.

Hummus For Thought

Renee Abi Saad from Jisr Qade Renee Abi Saad from Jisr Qade

Students from the American University of Beirut (AUB) and Hamra goers might have noticed the Mixed Feelings exhibition telling the story of Lebanese of African and Asian heritage and their daily struggles. The project, which will tour Lebanon, is the brainchild of Lebanese Nigerian artist and activist Nisreen Kaj and Polish photographer Marta Bogdanska and has involved several key members of Lebanon’s civil society as well as several NGOs in highlighting the oft-ignored daily realities of those among us who have an African or Asian parent. Mixed Feelings, explained in detail below, is a collection of 33 photos of those Lebanese accompanied by quotes touching on the subjects of ‘race’, racism, ‘othering’, racialization and national belonging. The following piece was written by both Marta and Nisreen and comprises of the answers they gave to questions sent to them by email.

Introducing Marta and…
