Black Hills Auction: The Auction of the Sacred – ICTMN.com

Black Hills Auction: The Auction of the Sacred – ICTMN.com.

This is, the “Center of the Heart of Everything that is… one of a small number of highly revered and geographically-cosmologically integral places on the entire planet….” Sacred places, recognized under federal judicial review, Presidential Executive Order (1996) and international law are to be protected.

On August 25, the Center of the Heart of Everything that is, will come up in on the auction block a Rapid City’s Ramkota Inn, destined to be diced into a set of 300 acre tracts, proposed for ranchettes, and a possible road through the heart, (and more divisions) of what has been, until now, a relatively un-desecrated sacred site. “We didn’t even know it was going to be sold,” Debra White Plume from Manderson tells me.” We heard nothing about it until we saw the auction announcement”.

The Brock Auction Company of Iowa and South Dakota in mid July announced, offering the Reynolds Ranch, noting, “This story begins in 1876 just 2 short years after General George Armstrong Custer led his historic expedition through the then almost unknown Black Hills in the Dakota Territory….In 1876 Joseph Reynolds filed his first claim & homesteaded … “Reynolds Prairie!” He was followed by 3 more generations …” Brock promotes the property noting, in some solace for potential buyers, “… As you sit in quiet solitude, with only the whispering of the wind gently easing through the pines, let your mind wander back in time & imagine the Native Americans, the Homesteaders & Pioneers who passed across this land that is now a part of yours & your families legacy forever!…” Some Lakota find this ironic, perhaps.

Is it possible that not everything should be owned privately? While other religions have sacred sites, which are revered and protected, the Lakota continue to struggle to protect their most sacred of places. The Lakota sacred sites include Mahto Paha, Bear Butte, where numerous challenges to the annual Sturgis Motor Cycle rally have met with some success, protections of vision quests at Grey Horned Butte ( Devils Tower) from recreational rock climbers.

“They do it – because they can and no one says a thing, it seems.”

Al-Mufaqara is one of 12 villages in an area recently declared “firing zone 918” by Israel. The Israeli Ministry of Defense wants to demolish eight of these villages and evacuate their residents to make way for a military training. About 1,500 Palestinians are expected to be forcibly displaced if this demolition is carried out.

The army says the training exercises in firing zone 918 are necessary to deal with shortcomings exposed during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, and the Ministry of Defense has indicated that the villagers will still be allowed to use the land on weekends and Jewish holidays.

Afghan Fables: The Handless Man

Once upon a time a disabled man was walking. His hand was cut, and blood was dripping onto the street. Yet he did not complain and walked normally. People watching him were surprised to see how bravely the man behaved.

Suddenly, from the corner of the street, another man emerged whose entire hand had been chopped off. The first man began to scream and shout: “Wey, wey, wey.”

Another man asked him, “Why do you not complain at all about your own injury and only begin to shout for the other injured man?”

The man with the bloodied hand replied: “I was not complaining because you couldn’t feel the pain I had. When I saw the man without a hand I started complaining because I knew he would feel exactly the same pain that I was feeling, and that we shared the same sorrow of loss that nobody else could understand.”

Ever since I heard this story I have tried to feel for any person in need and anyone who has suffered a loss. Although I am a human being full of faults and sometimes neglectful, I always wish in my heart to show kindness to everyone, so that anyone may look me in the eye and tell me their problems.

Let’s put our hands together to help our brothers and sisters who are never able to look us in the eye; those who are never able to shake our hand because they don’t have any hands; those who can never walk anywhere in order to talk to us about how hard they have it, but who survive and are successful. People who need to hear a kind word, who have never smiled and those who have never experienced peace.

Let’s be hands for the handless people of the world.

This is another story told by my father and I love it also for its very telling lessons.

A note from Norwan: “Wey wey” is something we say when we are complaining about something.

Italy honors Fascist military leader – UPI.com

Italy honors Fascist military leader – UPI.com.

Shame on them! “Is it possible to allow, accept or simply tolerate that in 2012, we dedicate a park and a museum to the fascist general and minister Rodolfo Graziani?” asked Esterino Montino, head of the Democratic Party in the Italy’s Lazio region.

Still, 100 people, including the mayor of Affile and a representative of the Vatican, attended the dedication ceremony of a complex costing 127,000 euros ($157,000), honoring a man the village’s Web site calls one of its “famous sons,” the BBC said.

Thousands of Roma face unforgiving future as France launches new campaign to dismantle camps

Thousands of Roma face unforgiving future as France launches new campaign to dismantle camps.

This is a Friday Aug. 10, 2012. a Roma encampment is set up near a highway in Clamart, west of Paris, Police officers on Thursday shut down encampments used by Roma or Gypsies, in Paris and in the northern city of Villeneuve d’Ascq. The Gypsy camps lack electricity and running water. Grocery carts become makeshift grills. Rats run rampant and fleas gnaw on young and old alike. It’s a life that modernity has bypassed, compounded by a dismal economy that has stretched from their homeland in Romania to a France that wants them to go somewhere anywhere else.(AP Photo/Michel Euler, File)

Where are they to go? Are they not human and deserving of humane treatment?

Flyover Feminism

Flyover Feminism.

This site’s goal is to create a community of feminist/womanist activists around the US and the world whose voices and viewpoints are typically left out of conversations and representations of mainstream feminism, who struggle to access resources and get their messages heard because they live outside of major media centers. Often due to geographical location (among other factors), their experiences and ideas aren’t part of the dialogue that defines the movement(s), their feminist and/or activist projects are ignored, and their efforts take place in the shadows.

Flyover Feminism will operate directly in response to this phenomenon. FF will be a space where feminist/womanists/activists who are hindered by place can reach out virtually in order to tell their stories, draw attention to their work, and share their triumphs and defeats.

FF is about bringing together people, resources, strategies, and ideas that too often are passed over because they originate in unexpected and unsung locations.

Resist the dark side before it consumes your humanity!

A young Iraqi man was killed in the latest in a series of hate attacks against foreigners in Greece. The death comes amid a wave of anti-immigrant feeling and follows electoral successes for the far-right.

Police said on Sunday that the 19-year-old Iraqi was stabbed to death by five men traveling on motorbikes.

The police said the men had “tried to attack a Romanian and a Moroccan in the same area” late on Saturday, a version of events supported by witness statements.

Greek Minister for Public Order Nikolaos Dendias said he had been informed by investigators that it had been a racist, anti-immigrant attack.

He said that both the government and the country’s judiciary would not be swayed in their determination to punish the perpetrators “no matter what pretext they used.”

The men were reported to have escaped on their bikes through the narrow city streets.

The killing took place after a police crackdown to clear Greek cities of illegal immigrants.

Yekaterina Samutsevich, defendant in the criminal case against the feminist punk group Pussy Riot:

In the closing statement, the defendant is expected to repent, express regret for their deeds or enumerate attenuating circumstances. In my case, as in the case of my colleagues in the group, this is completely unnecessary. Instead, I want to voice my thoughts about the reasons behind what has happened to us.

That Christ the Savior Cathedral had become a significant symbol in the political strategy of the authorities was clear to many thinking people when Vladimir Putin’s former [KGB] colleague Kirill Gundyayev took over as leader of the Russian Orthodox Church. After this happened, Christ the Savior Cathedral began to be openly used as a flashy backdrop for the politics of the security forces, which are the main source of power [in Russia].

Why did Putin feel the need to exploit the Orthodox religion and…
