Through the Eye of the Needle

It was a beautiful day, rather warm. The sea perfectly calm, reflecting the blue of a cloudless sky.

We got up early, thinking to avoid the usual police cordon. We saw no signs of it. We assumed they were watching us, that they were all around, but on this occasion they didn’t make themselves visible.

The booth of Cuban Voices was dedicated to technology.

The rudimentary and the modern lent a hand.

We were satisfied with the work done.

There were very original performances, like that of El Sexto.

Nuestra Vida, Nuestra Voz

As we saw in the elections, political pundits were somehow shocked that Latino voters came out to support Democratic candidates.  Many think that the Latino community is by nature conservative, but this is far from reality.  Who can forget that 75% of Latinos swept President Obama to victory and that 77% voted for the Democratic House candidates? And you can hardly say that all Latinas are conservative: they supported Obama with 77% of their votes.

So it comes to no surprise to us that the Mexican Supreme Court paved the path for same sex marriage in all 31 states of Mexico last week.  In a unanimous ruling, they struck down a same sex marriage ban in Oaxaca, building off of a 2010 decision that held that same sex marriages in Mexico City must be recognized nationwide.  Mexico isn’t the only Latin American country where marriage equality is…

FDA is warning pet owners and caretakers that Nature’s Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats (3-lb pkgs; Lot code BESTBY061913DEN; Product of USA) should not be fed to pets, because the treats may be contaminated with Salmonella. The contaminated product was sold at Costco stores in the Denver, Colorado area. Costco is cooperating with FDA, and has removed all of the implicated product from store shelves. The retailer also will contact customers who may have purchased the product.

The FDA warning follows three prior recalls of pet treats initiated by Kasel Associates Inc. (Denver, CO), issued in September and October 2012. Kasel has refused to recall the batch that is the subject of FDA’s most recent warning, even though the Colorado Department of Agriculture found Salmonella in a sample of the product.

Kasel appears to have an ongoing Salmonella contamination problem.

Tahrir A

I wrote this piece for the  Daily News Egypt just before yesterday protest in front of  the presidential palace. The way President Morsy ignored the crowd yesterday reaffirm my views.

They went out in the thousands; Egyptians from every walk of life and almost all political affiliations protested in Tahrir against President Morsy’s latest decree and the draft of the new constitution.

However, they were not the only ones protesting. Islamist groups, mainly the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafis, protested too, but in support of the president and the new constitution, which, in their eyes, is Islamic and consistent with the “core” values of Egyptian society. They proclaimed their protest to be a “true million-man march,” labelling the Tahrir protestors as un-Islamic, the secular minority, infiltrated by the ex-regime and even funded from abroad.
The Muslim Brotherhood is waging a war of perception, not just for domestic consumption but…

A Lifetime Of Service

The 2013 Echoing Green Fellowship application is now open until January 7, 2013 for social entrepreneurs “with bold ideas looking for up to $90,000 in seed funding, strategic support, and a powerful community of 500+ other Fellows and Alumni over a 2 year fellowship.” This year, Echoing Green is also working hard to increase the applicant pool of U.S.-based Latino, African-American, and female social entrepreneurs as they see diversity of background and experiences to be key strengths in their community of entrepreneurs.

It is a fantastic opportunity that we want to see more AmeriCorps Alums applying for, as well as encouraging promising social entrepreneurs you may know to apply as well.

I had the opportunity to serve as a guest reviewer for the 2012 Echoing Green Fellowship.  It was an intense, rigorous vetting process – and I remember vividly sitting at my parents’ kitchen table late on a Friday night…

How Millions of Farmers are Advancing Agriculture For Themselves

SRI methodology is based on four main principles that interact in synergistic ways:

Establish healthy plants early and carefully, nurturing their root potential.

Reduce plant populations, giving each plant more room to grow above and below ground and room to capture sunlight and obtain nutrients.

Enrich the soil with organic matter, keeping it well-aerated to support better growth of roots and more aerobic soil biota.

Apply water purposefully in ways that favor plant-root and soil-microbial growth, avoiding flooded (anaerobic) soil conditions.

These principles are translated into a number of irrigated rice cultivation practices which under most smallholder farmers’ conditions are the following:

Plant young seedlings carefully and singly, giving them wider spacing usually in a square pattern, so that both roots and canopy have ample room to spread.

Keep the soil moist but not inundated. Provide sufficient water for plant roots and beneficial soil organisms to grow, but not so much as to suffocate or suppress either, e.g., through alternate wetting and drying, or through small but regular applications.

Add as much compost, mulch or other organic matter to the soil as possible, ‘feeding the soil’ so that the soil can, in turn, ‘feed the plant.’

Control weeds with mechanical methods that can incorporate weeds while breaking up the soil’s surface. This actively aerates the root zone as a beneficial by-product of weed control. This practice can promote root growth and the abundance of beneficial soil organisms, adding to yield.

Hummus For Thought

This picture was uploaded on the Anti-Racism Movement’s Facebook page by Gary Lian. What more powerful reminder do we need? the conditions that migrant workers have to go through in Lebanon are horrific, barbaric and disgusting.

Here is the description:

“I took this picture today. It’s the building facing our own. This is how Lebanese treat their migrant workers. They make them stand on a dangerous window ledge and clean their windows. God forbid they have dirty windows to enjoy the bustling traffic. This is just a shame.”

This is not the first time I blog about this and I can keep on repeating this over and over again. The situation is catastrophic. Living like street dogs would perhaps be appealing to migrant (mainly) women who have to endure this humiliation. No human being deserves to be lowered to that level.

Support the Anti-Racism Movement and the Migrant Workers Task…
