Fear of anti-Cockney backlash after Woolwich killers revealed as Londoners

Well thank God they weren’t from Oldham! Then we’d really be for it!

Pride's Purge

(satire?)

The announcement that the murder of a young British soldier in Woolwich was the work of men police believe were British-born Londoners sparked fears of a backlash against cockneys and eastenders yesterday.

As the direction of the  investigation became clear, a parallel operation was launched by police chiefs to brief community leaders in the capital and prepare for reprisal attacks on anyone expressing a liking for jellied eels or looking like they were born within the sound of Bow bells.

Police say that since Wednesday’s horrific events, police have recorded 30 hate crime incidents against the cockney and mockney community, including an attack on a man wearing an I ♥ London T-shirt and criminal damage to a pie and mash shop.

.

Well it’s just as ridiculous as blaming all Muslims for the tragic events in Woolwich, isn’t it?

Why The Lebanese Government Is Silent On Tripoli

A Separate State of Mind | A Blog by Elie Fares

Every once in a while, the city I once referred to as “3enna” by mistake becomes a place I force myself to go the extra mile to recognize.
The last time such heavy fights broke out in the city, we were all in outrage at how media couldn’t care less about the people dying and the innocent lives in danger. Today, the outrage over Tripoli’s worst night since the Civil War is gravitating towards a government that is as apathetic as apathy goes.

However, are we supposed to expect anything more from our government? Tripoli’s Ministers and MPs go on air to voice their disdain and condemnation over what’s going on. What’s actually happening, though, is that in the other side of the room is one of their henchmen waiting on a phone to issue further instructions to the fighters on both sides of the battles.

Celebrity pastor under fire after worshippers die in rush for ‘holy water’ | World news | guardian.co.uk

The worshippers were hoping to obtain holy “new anointing water”, which Emmanuel TV had announced would be distributed for free. “The anointing water usually costs 80 cedis, but we learned that on Sunday it would be given out for free,” said Joseph Adanvor, 52, who witnessed the fatal stampede. “I have never seen anything like it before. People had come from Togo, Benin, even from Kenya. They tried to close the church but people were climbing over the walls and breaking in. The police and army were there but they couldn’t control the crowds.”

When are identical twins not identical twins? When they’re disabled and the DWP says they’re not.

Which one was denied the oldest or the youngest – incredible

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the DWP!)

The Department of Work and Pensions has assessed two identical twins with Down’s Syndrome – born just minutes apart – and awarded one with an allowance to help his family provide round-the-clock care but refused his brother the same allowance.

In a case which shows just how arbitrary and nonsensical the DWP’s decisions on awarding disability benefits has become – one of the twins was awarded Disability Living Allowance while the other was not.

Here’s the full story from the Lancashire Evening Post:

Benefits farce hits family of Down’s Syndrome twins

Whether incompetence or just plain idiocy – the stress this kind of blundering by the DWP puts on the disabled and their families is immense and in my view is unforgivable.

Shame on them.

How I Lost 30 Kilos

Good on you!

A Separate State of Mind | A Blog by Elie Fares

Around December of 2012, as I was sitting in the back of my friend’s coupé, the idea of starting a diet was running through my mind. It had been running for several days. When we reached our destination and I was supposed to get out of the car, I had the worst back pain of my life. I had to use my friend as support to walk. It’s not a nice thing to go through when she’s half your size.

As a 23 year old, few conditions can give me that. With no relevant family history for other conditions, I was sure it was my weight. My new year resolution was then to lose all those extra kilos posing a daily risk for increased health problems.

On January 3rd, a Thursday, upon returning from class, I decided to visit a local dietitian in Batroun called Mira Moussa. I weighed in…

Egyptian Streets

I could tell they were both good people, as they sat there waiting. It was no surprise. One can always depend on us Egyptian folk, always so humble and incredibly hospitable toward strangers. I had missed that. A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth, and suddenly, my memory came rushing back.

“I don’t live here. I’ve been living abroad for most of my life,” I started. “I don’t understand how I got here.” I scrunched my eyebrows together, deep in thought, trying to understand this crazy predicament.

Abdul Rahman stood up slowly, and walked over to a wooden table wedged into the corner of the small room. He began slicing something, but I couldn’t make out what it was. I realized I hadn’t taken in my surroundings. The room was small, with…
