Islamist offensive against Christians in Upper Egypt

Harming and oppressing people of other religions brings no honor and certainly offends the one you claim to worship!

Egyptian Streets

As the Islamist-movement is on the defensive in Cairo, their peers in Upper-Egypt are waging an intensified hate campaign these days.

ASSIUT, EGYPT: “Islamic, Islamic, despite the Christians”, shouted the 10.000 Islamists who were marching down a Christian dominated street in the Nile side city of Assiut last night, Associated Press (AP) reports.

Supervised by an adult, six children were spray painting «Boycott the Christians» and «Pope Tawadros is a dog» on the wall, according to the AP. Christian homes, stores and churches have been marked with red painted crosses.

At least 11 Copts have been killed since Morsi’s toppling by the Military on June 30. Several others have been injured the last month during violent attacks on churches in Asyut, Luxor and al-Minya.

Pleading for protection

As a reaction a coalition of 16 Egyptian rights groups Wednesday expressed «grave concern regarding the increasing sectarian violence…

Sick of Uncle Tom’s & Aunt Tomesia’s

Well said – not all that different in some ways as the union movement – they fought and died for worker’s rights – and membership is now down to nothing compared to 20 years ago. The health benefits, the 40 hour week, workman’s compensation, right to organize, sick pay, overtime pay, minimum wage – they are the ones who got those benefits for everyone, Right on Tess!

Tess Powell Out Loud

There was a time in this country when African-American celebrities weren’t afraid to speak out against injustices of their race. Perhaps because many of them were still feeling the indignities of the Jim Crow era and/or because they truly cared.  Jackie Robinson, Nina Simone, Lena Horne, Paul Roebeson, Muhammed Ali, & of course Harry Belafonte, just to name a few. They fearlessly spoke up & participated in social issues not worried about the effect it would have on their career status. Without them & our Black leadership, Dr.King, MalcolmX, & Meadgar Evars, there’s no doubt, African-Americans would have remained second class citizens in the country we built.

This is why I’m baffled today’s’ celebrities are so indifferent to those that paved their way. Don’t they realize if so many had not laid down lives & limbs for them, they wouldn’t have the education or opportunity to have to acquired the…

Arabic is Dying in Lebanon

A Separate State of Mind | A Blog by Elie Fares

We’ve all tossed around the idea of the Arabic language meeting a slow but sure demise in Lebanon. It was only very recently that a friend and I figured we should strive to lessen mixing languages during our day to day discussions. This has proven to be especially difficult seeing as our day to day discussions stem from elements in our lives where Arabic is as dead as dead goes.

As an example at the top of my head, there are next to no Arabic words that I’m aware of with which I can describe what goes on at the hospital. So I simply revert to the language that makes such descriptions easier. It’s a simple matter of convenience.

However, there are now tangible numbers as to the state of the Arabic language today. Out of more than 61,000 brevet students, only 33.7% managed to get the required 30/60 to…

Salamís

antoine cassar

The series of Atlas poems continues, with another island: this time, the Greek islet of Salamís, or Σαλαμίνα, in the Saronic Gulf, 2 km off the port of Piraeus, 16 km west of Athens. 96 km2 (larger than Gozo, but less than half the size of Malta), population 39,283 (as of 2011).

Until the mid-20th century, the majority of the inhabitants were Arvanite (Albanian Greeks), who know the island by the name of Koullouri (Κȣλλȣρι). Following mass migration from Athens, the Arvanites are now a minority; many of them simply became absorbed into the ‘national’ Greek identity.

Salamís Island is known as the birthplace of the warrior Ajax, and hosts the cave in which Euripides retired from the world to write his tragedies. It’s also known for the famous Battle of Salamis, 480 B.C., won by the Greek city-states, signalling the beginning of the end for…

P&G to offshore Cincinnati jobs – Cincinnati Business Courier.

What price loyalty? Not much! Procter & Gamble Co. plans to eliminate about 50 jobs in its Customer Service Accounts Receivable department in Cincinnati, beginning in October.

The workers will be replaced by people who will be hired at current P&G offices in San Jose, Costa Rica.

About 15 administrators in the Accounts Receivable department will remain in Cincinnati after the offshoring is completed by June 2015, said Marie-Laure Salvado, P&G communications director for North America.

Ten similar jobs will be eliminated in Canada, with those employees replaced by new workers in Costa Rica. Five administrators will remain on the job in the Toronto office of Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG).
