Post-Revolution Libyan Kitesurfers Reclaim Their Turf | Green Prophet

(Not a really big deal but nice pay off from revolution) For years, anyone who wanted to kite surf in Libya had a real challenge: beaches were under government control and many sports were outlawed. But now, 100 or so kite surfers in the country have reclaimed their turf, and even women are getting involved.

Jalal Elwalid is largely responsible for making kitesurfing such a popular sport in Libya, where the former regime outlawed certain sports, Brownbook Magazine reports.

He owns the country’s only dedicated kitesurfing shop in Gargaresh, an upscale Tripoli neighborhood, and recently arranged a gathering of some 30 surfers at Farwa Island.

Tomato Tasting Contest

tomato contest1

Today I held a tomato tasting contest with some of my friends. I have to say I was very disappointed. Not with my friends but with my tomatoes. I went last to taste them and could not believe how many of the tomatoes were either bland or watery. Some seemed weak in flavor. I’ve eaten them all summer and couldn’t remember them like this. They were not at all like the sweet flavorful tomatoes I ate last month.

Then it hit me-the 3 inches of rain we had this past week really weakened the flavors. I have had many split their skins this week from taking on so much water and that explains why so many of my favorites were rather bland vs a month ago they were very flavorful. They say if you want the flavors more intense, cut back on watering during harvest time which I did. Usually…

Celebrate the Harvest Moon (Meigetsu) #haiku #poetry

Great moon and poem for the day

penned in moon dust

Bonfire

golden face glow

life stirs beneath your smile

ready for harvest

celebrate harvest

kids laughter in hay wagon

stew on the fire

We lived in an agricultural area for years.

How fun to celebrate the end of harvest by a bonfire of cornstalks and walnut limbs while the kids went on a moonlight ride.

Message to the Half-Borns Begins

This particular piece includes Mister Ed’s Complete, uncondensed, unedited, uncensored harangue. If you are like most humans, you’re probably not going to like it. But it could save your life, just for starters.

Fiddling While Rome Burns

On second thought, if you’re reading this, you’re probably not like “most humans.” You may already have been thinking, as many of us humans have, about what is wrong with our species, as we watch ourselves accelerating toward an armageddon, which could happen by any one or by several or more together of a number of death traps that we have set for ourselves…and within anywhere from a few decades (or less) to fifty years, not much more, with nary a sense of alarm.

“My sorrow, when she’s here with me, thinks these dark days of autumn rain are beautiful as days can be. she loves the bare, the withered tree, she walks the sodden pasture lane.” ~Robert Frost

This Week’s picture and quote prompt  provided by Ese is bare. Autumn a fitting time for bare and black and white.

Diplomacy may make Bashar disposable | Opinion , Columnist | THE DAILY STAR

Within a week, one story – punishing Bashar Assad for his probable use of chemical weapons against civilians in the Ghouta region – has been pushed aside by another: the possibility of a rapprochement between Iran and the United States, even as Washington is coordinating its policies toward Syria with another adversary, Russia.

It’s best in these cases not to get carried away by optimism. Diplomacy and dialogue are not ends in themselves. Yet the potential opportunities are great, whether for Syria or the rest of the Middle East, if broader understandings can be reached between the main regional and global actors. And tectonic shifts, if they occur, may ultimately ensure that Assad is politically disposable.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has made normalization with the West a central plank of his political program. Critically, he seems to have the support of the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. On Tuesday, Khamenei endorsed Rouhani’s position, saying Iran should embrace diplomacy over militarism and that it was time for “heroic leniency.”

In remarks to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, Khamenei said, “[I]t is not necessary for the IRGC to be active in the political field, but defending the revolution requires that they understand political realities.” This appeared to be Khamenei’s way of legitimizing Rouhani’s opening in front of an institution that, potentially, may pose problems for the president down the road.

From the Obama administration’s perspective, bringing Iran into negotiations on Syria’s future is necessary, even if the pitfalls are many. Supporting Assad’s regime has become a burden even for his closest partners, who might welcome a transition away from the Syrian president if it means they can preserve their interests in Syria.

Americans, Europeans oppose Syria intervention -poll | News , Middle East | THE DAILY STAR

The poll found 62 percent of Americans and 72 percent of Europeans believed their countries should avoid military intervention in Syria’s civil war, which has killed more than 100,000 people.

Only 30 percent of Americans and 22 percent of Europeans felt their countries should intervene in Syria.

In Turkey, which borders Syria, 72 percent said their country should stay out, while 21 percent favoured intervention.

In all regions, the survey found a hardening of attitudes against outside intervention, compared with last year.

Walgreen sending employees to insurance exchanges – Chicago Business Journal

Walgreen Co. is expected to announce on Wednesday that will provide payments to eligible employees for the subsidized purchase of health insurance beginning in 2014.

The Wall Street Journal said Walgreen’s (NYSE: WAG) plan would require employees to shop for coverage on a private health-insurance marketplace.

The move would make Walgreen’s one the largest employers yet to make major changes to its health insurance coverage for employees. Walgreen’s plan would affect roughly 160,000 employees, the Journal said.

Walgreen joins such companies as International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM), Time Warner Inc. (NYSE: TWX), Sears Holding Co. and Darden Restaurants Inc. (NYSE: DRI) in sending workers to private health insurance exchanges.
