Opinion | Let’s Agree Not to Kill One Another – The New York Times

Threatening to kill or rape someone shouldn’t be banal. It should shock everyone who comes across such a threat. And that should go without saying, except that increasingly it doesn’t, not in a world where the president has said that he longed for the days when disruptive protesters were carried away from the scene “on a stretcher.” It’s perversely heartening to see that the apparent murder of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi seems to have temporarily interrupted business as usual. Such shock and outrage is crucial, because in a world where dissenters are dismembered, there’s no hope for change. The prospect that you’ll be killed for what you say makes discussion essentially impossible. A society in which critics fear death is a society with fewer critics, and hence with fewer chances for change.

A President Who Believes He Is Entitled to His Own Facts – The New York Times – Similar to a Bavarian Clown

Mr. Trump has appeared to grow noticeably more comfortable in the role of president, according to advisers, and that comfort level has reinforced his confidence in his own instincts, including what he regards as facts. Mr. Trump often points to a key moment — his election in 2016, which defied the polls — as proof that agreed-upon data can be wrong. His long career in the New York real estate world convinced Mr. Trump that all people are prone to shading their views according to their own self-interest. Objectivity is not something he expects of people, and he long ago came to believe that “facts” are really arbitrary.

‘He’s my guy’: Donald Trump praises Gianforte for assault on Guardian reporter | US news | The Guardian – The audience applauded attacking journalist.

Guardian US editor, John Mulholland, said: “The president of the United States tonight applauded the assault on an American journalist who works for the Guardian. To celebrate an attack on a journalist who was simply doing his job is an attack on the first amendment by someone who has taken an oath to defend it. “In the aftermath of the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, it runs the risk of inviting other assaults on journalists both here and across the world where they often face far greater threats. We hope decent people will denounce these comments and that the president will see fit to apologize for them.”

The Nooses of Adelanto – IMM Print

An unannounced visit to the Adelanto ICE Processing Center by federal inspectors has found nooses present in various cells, unfair segregation policies, and that those in detention have been receiving inadequate medical care. The nooses were braided bed sheets hanging from the vents, and were found in a large number of the detention centers’ cells. There has already been one suicide committed with the assistance of a bed sheet, and as the report from the federal inspectors noted, there has been at least seven suicide attempts between 2016 and 2017.
