The US-Mexico border: two sides that are united by fear of Trump’s closure | US news | The Guardian

Marcela Coallo is selling handbags in a shop called Bolsa Coketa. “We’re all scared, because we all depend on people from Mexico,” she said. “President Trump talks about wanting to help American families, so why is he threatening our livelihoods?” How long could Bolsa Coketa survive if the border closed? “One week perhaps,” she said. “That’s how serious this is.” Faced with the same question, Juan Aguilera, a pharmacist on the Mexican side of the bridge, has an equally grim answer. About 80% of his customers, he said, are US citizens, come to buy pharmaceuticals at knockdown prices. How long could he survive with a shuttered border – a week, a month, a year? He laughed. “Days,” he replied. “Just a few days.”

Friday Open Thread | They continue to try and kill these American Citizens | 3CHICSPOLITICO

This is DELIBERATE. This is CRUEL. This is WHO THEY ARE. And, I hope folks wake up to this fact. These are non-White citizens, and so, in this Administration’s eyes, they don’t count. What is happening to the citizens of Puerto Rico SHOULD NOT be happening in this country. Period. Once again, I will repeat, there is no middle ground here. This is the cruelty that his part and parcel of this Administration. There’s nothing here, in this cruelty, where people can ‘ meet in the middle’. They want to kill American Citizens…We do not. I ask those Puerto Ricans on the mainland—are you registered to vote? Do you see why your vote matters?

Trump Complains to Congress About Providing Aid to Puerto Rico

Earlier this month, Puerto Rico’s government cut the island’s food stamps program by 25 percent, bringing it back down to the level it was at before the hurricane. An astonishing 43 percent island’s population currently relies on food stamps. After the House passed a bill in January allocating $600 million in emergency funding for food stamps in the territory, Trump called the bill “excessive and unnecessary.” It was also announced today that HUD will look into whether the White House has prevented disaster relief funding from reaching the island, in light of multiple private comments from Trump about his unwillingness to continue providing aid. “We are in the process of looking into whether there has been any interference and do plan to report back to Congress on what we find‚” Jeremy Kirkland, counsel to the HUD inspector general’s office, said in response to questions from Rep. Maxine Waters in front of the House Financial Services Committee.

Fury as Australian senator blames Christchurch attack on Muslim immigration | World news | The Guardian

Australia’s prime minister, Scott Morrison, said: “The remarks by Senator Fraser Anning blaming the murderous attacks by a violent, rightwing, extremist terrorist in New Zealand on immigration are disgusting. Those views have no place in Australia, let alone the Australian parliament.” The former Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull wrote: “Fraser Anning’s comments today are contemptible. He is a disgrace to the Senate and, what is worse, by spreading hatred and turning Australians against each other, he is doing exactly what the terrorists want.”
