Boris Johnson’s philosophy isn’t just elitist – it’s sinister | Suzanne Moore | Comment is free | The Guardian

Boris Johnson – or Borisconi, as I call him – has a severe case of premature ejaculation. Obviously I am using ejaculation here to mean saying something too soon and too hastily.

He has said what he really thinks. Will the electorate, the great lumpen mass of obviously stupid people, swallow it? Rich people are rich because they are better, cleverer, more ambitious. We should worship them for paying taxes. Try not to think about the ones that don\’t. Oh, and let\’s have Boris Island.

There are no surprises in what he said, other than timing. The Tories increasingly favour genetic explanations for inequality. If whole swaths of us are born poor, dumb and without the drive to get to Eton, never mind a jobcentre, it\’s our own stupid fault. Only lunatics would point to the \”cleverness\” of the bankers who fabricated formulae that sold off risk in ever smaller bundles, with no consequences for the buyers. Amazing how these intellectual giants produced an unmitigated disaster!

Let\’s move on, as Borisconi did in his party political broadcast for himself: let the wealthy take London, let a thousand Shards split the sky open so that golden showers rain down on to multibillionaires. Then, he got controversial with an ill-judged and frankly under-researched passage about IQ. Give me back my Mensa membership because any fule know any fule can be tutored up for IQ tests, which is why selective schools prefer this discredited measure of intelligence. Never mind. A genetically determinist argument – part selfish gene, part antisocial goonishness – is now in favour.

Staffers for French aid organization killed in Afghanistan | News | DW.DE | 27.11.2013

The beat goes on and on and on – some never tire of killing for no reason but it’s their job! WTF

\”They were killed in the course of their work to support development in the north. We deplore the deaths of our colleagues while they were carrying out their duties,\” he added. \”Today our thoughts are with the families and relatives of our lost colleagues and to our teams in Afghanistan.\”

The Taliban were not immediately available for comment. Northern Afghanistan is generally more peaceful than the south and east of the country, but insurgents, militias and criminal gangs are active in the area.

Settlers bulldoze Palestinian lands west of Salfit, chop olive trees | Maan News Agency

SALFIT (Ma\’an) — Israeli settlers raided lands in the northern West Bank with bulldozers on early Tuesday morning in order to level the area to prepare it for expansion of the nearby Ariel settlement block, a witness said.

Settlers razed the lands north of Bruqin village west of Salfit to prepare it for the construction of factories that will be a part of the adjacent Jewish-only settlement area.

The settlers, who are from the nearby Brukhin settlement, also chopped 10 olive trees in the Wadi Baqdonis area north of the village.

Researcher Khalid Mali said that \”the factories in the Ariel settlements are expanding,\” and highlighted that settlers have been confiscating lands from the Palestinian villages and areas of Bokin, Salfit, Sarta, Haris, and Kifl Haris.

When you lie, lie big! Text of H.R. 3533: Endangered Species Management Self-Determination Act (Introduced version) – GovTrack.us

the term ESA means the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.).

3.FINDINGS

Congress finds that—

(1)the ESA was passed in 1973 as a means of protecting and recovering species and has not been substantially revised in over 25 years;

(2)the ESA has not achieved its stated goal of recovering threatened species or endangered species;

(3)of the species listed in accordance with the ESA, less than 1 percent of the total number of species in the United States have been recovered and removed from the list, largely due to data errors or other factors;

(4)there is—

(A)no comprehensive independent study of the costs or benefits of the ESA;

(B)no full accounting of how much the Federal Government and State and local governments spend to implement, enforce, and comply with the ESA; and

(C)no meaningful effort to account for the costs the ESA imposes on the private sector;

(5)the ESA effectively penalizes landowners for owning endangered species habitat by forcing them to bear the cost of conservation;

(6)the regulatory listing process under the ESA has become a tool for environmentalists to undermine, slow down, or halt construction of infrastructure projects, hampering economic growth and employment; and

(7)litigation stemming from the ESA and some resulting settlements between the litigants and the Federal Government have made the ESA even more unworkable, to the detriment of species.

Israeli forces demolish water tank in Nablus village | Maan News Agency

Occupation is always seemingly random in its acts of terrorism and intimidation to deny humanity of those it seeks to suppress.

Israeli forces demolished a water tank and an agricultural structure in the Nablus village of Aqraba on Wednesday, a local official said.

Deputy mayor of Aqraba Bilal Abdul-Hadi told Ma\’an that three bulldozers escorted by seven military vehicles stormed the al-Taweel neighborhood and began demolishing the structures, claiming they were built without authorization.

The steel agricultural structure belongs to Marwan Hussein Abdul-Hadi and the water tank to Imad Fathi Minnat Allah.

Israel has destroyed more than 558 Palestinian properties in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since the beginning of this year, displacing 919 people, according to OCHA.

Between 2009 and 2011, Israel\’s military destroyed 173 water, sanitation and hygiene structures in the West Bank including 40 wells, 57 rainwater collection cisterns and at least 20 toilets and sinks, OCHA says.

Deadly blasts target Iranian embassy in Beirut – LEBANON – FRANCE 24

“There’s large scale destruction, there’s blood on the ground here on the scene. It’s not a pretty sight,” said Salhani, adding that the attack occurred, “outside the Iranian Embassy, which is surrounded by residential buildings, as most embassies are in Beirut. Many of the buildings here have their windows knocked out, you can see water spraying out of buildings and glass all over the ground.”

The al Qaeda-linked Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed responsibility for the double suicide attacks.

In a Twitter post in Arabic, the group’s spiritual guide Sheikh Sirajeddine Zureiqat, said the “double martyrdom operation” was carried out by “two Sunni heroes of Lebanon”. A later Twitter posting warned that the group will continue its operations in Lebanon until Hezbollah pulls its fighters out of Syria.

Security camera footage showed a man rushing toward the outer wall of the Iranian Embassy before detonating a belt packed with explosives. The second explosion was caused by a car bomb, said Lebanese security officials.

There were conflicting reports about whether the victims of the attack included Iran’s cultural attaché to Lebanon, Sheikh Ebrahim Ansari. Earlier Tuesday, Iran’s ambassador told the Associated Press that Ansari had succumbed to wounds sustained in the bombings.

But in an interview with Iranian state TV later Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said Ansari was critically wounded and showing “signs of life”.

Shiite-dominated neighbourhoods of Beirut have been targeted in the past few months with car bombs and rockets in what Syrian rebels say is retaliation for Hezbollah’s involvement in the Syrian civil war.

Hezbollah fighters in Syria have been supporting forces loyal to Assad, who hails from the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shia Islam.

Settlers firebomb Palestinian home in revenge attack | Maan News Agency

Settlers set fire to a Palestinian home in the Ramallah village of Sinjil overnight Wednesday, in an apparent revenge attack following the killing of an Israeli soldier, PA security sources said.

Settlers entered the village overnight and threw a firebomb at the home of Khaled Khalil. Five members of his family suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to a Ramallah hospital for treatment.

Settlers also sprayed graffiti on the side of a wall which read: \”Hi from Eden, revenge,\” Israeli news site Ynet said.

B\’Tselem field researcher Iyad Haddad said Rawada and Khaled Dar Khalil saw several people outside of their home in the middle of the night, with one of them pouring gasoline on their front porch.

They then lit the gasoline and drove off.

The family were trapped in the home as the front door is the only entrance and went up onto the roof. The Palestinian Authority fire department arrived forty minutes later and Israeli forces about an hour later.
