While He Was Tweeting: The Puerto Rico Edition, Week 36 | Dame Magazine

Congress let CHIP expire on Saturday by not holding a vote to reestablish the program’s $15-billion appropriation.   No biggie, it’s just the Children’s Healthcare Insurance Program insuring 9 million children in the United States.

Trump ambassador to Israel goes rogue | The Electronic Intifada

Friedman, Trump’s longtime bankruptcy lawyer, was referring to a Security Council resolution which, in fact, emphasizes “the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war” and calls for Israel’s withdrawal from territory occupied in the 1967 War.Friedman’s interpretation directly contradicts numerous subsequent resolutions that explicitly reaffirm the illegality of Israel’s settlements in the West Bank.Israel’s transfer of its civilian population to territory it occupies is a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention and is thus a war crime.Friedman, incidentally, is a major bankroller of one such settlement.

Inoreader – ‘Get out!’: Lt General rains hell on Air Force Academy after racist messages were left on black cadets’ rooms

“So just in case you’re unclear on where I stand on this topic, I’m going to leave you with my most important thought today,” he said. “If you can’t treat someone with dignity and respect, then you need to get out. If you can’t treat someone from another gender, whether that’s a man or a woman, with dignity and respect, then you need to get out. If you demean someone in any way, then you need to get out. And if you can’t treat someone from another race, or a different color of skin, with dignity and respect, then you need to get out.”“If you can’t treat someone with dignity and respect, then get out,” Silveria repeated.

President Trump the divider exploits another opportunity in NFL attacks: Brent Larkin | cleveland.com

Remember this about Trump: He’ll always be a divider, never a unifier. He owes his entire political existence to a strategy designed to tear the country apart by exploiting issues related to race, culture, religion and economic standing. Absent continuous chaos, his support crumbles. That need to constantly divide explains his newfound, and laughable, loyalty to our flag. When Vietnam came calling nearly 50 years ago, Trump pigeonholed his patriotism, seeking and receiving five draft deferments, allegedly for bone spurs in his feet.

‘African’ drumming, the homogenisation of a continent – Media Diversified “Ethnic Elitism and Racism – so Lame and Easy Cultural Appropriation – Let’s have a drum circle tonight!

Ever heard the term ‘European string ensemble’, though? Probably not – because it doesn’t really mean much. Are we talking about a group of violins? Guitars? Contrabasses? A mixture of these and more? This brings me to my question – why are we still talking about ‘African drumming ensembles’?Consider the many different cultures and 54 countries that make up Africa. From the Habesha in the East, Arabs in the North, Twi in the West and Zulu in the South, the various languages and cultures number into the thousands. To put things into perspective, there are more languages spoken in Nigeria (520) alone than in the whole of Europe put together (28 official) (Ethnologue, 2017).

Remember this about Donald Trump. He knows the depths of American bigotry | Gary Younge | Opinion | The Guardian

America was 200 years a slave state; 100 years an apartheid state; and just over 50 years a non-racial democracy. The concept of equality is relatively new.Not everyone got the memo. Trump knows his base. Those who knelt were booed in some stadiums. While white Americans overwhelmingly oppose the idea of white supremacy, its core message still holds considerable appeal: almost half of white Americans believe “white America is under attack” and a third think “America should protect and preserve its white European heritage”.That said, after Trump’s tirade many more NFL players knelt this weekend. Other teams refused to come out for the anthem. A range of entertainers and other sportspeople have joined in. Coaches, owners and the NFL itself slammed Trump for his comments. It remains to be seen if that coalition will hold. But for now it is growing in size and confidence. That, in itself, is cause for hope.

‘Leave UK immediately’: scientist is latest victim of Home Office blunder | UK news | The Guardian – A Prequel to what Trump would like to see in US?

Danaie holds Canadian-Iranian joint citizenship. He is an electron microscopy scientist who has worked since October 2016 at Diamond Light Source, the UK’s national synchrotron, based at Harwell science and innovation campus in Oxfordshire. He has a work visa valid until September 2019 and previously worked at Oxford University’s department of materials.Danaie went public with his case after the Guardian highlighted the introduction of “hostile environment” immigration status bank account checks last week, and following an assessment by the chief inspector of borders that there was a 10% error rate in Home Office records used for some forms of enforcement action.“I happen to be in that 10% statistic. Despite having a valid work visa, I received this letter,” he said. “It hurts on so many levels. They even have a typo in my name. Such disarray is astonishing in an office responsible for security.”

Fair Immigration Reform Movement | Senate Republicans Join White Supremacists Ranks, Introduce Bigoted Immigration Bill

The Succeed Act introduced today is more of the same: another bill brought forward by Republicans that continues to criminalize immigrant communities. The bill calls for the extreme vetting of immigrants, and restricts family reunification and legal migration. We’ve seen this all before and we’re not going to stand for it. We demand that a clean Dream Act is brought to the floor for a vote. The overwhelming majority of the country is on our side. It’s time for Republicans to grow a spine, get on board and say no to bigotry.”
