Stephen Moore Awkwardly Tries to Defend Racist Obama Joke

Stephen Moore decided to share a little joke. “There’s that great cartoon going along that [shows] the New York Times headline ‘First Thing Donald Trump Does As President Is Kick a Black Family Out of Public Housing,’ and it has Obama leaving the White House,” Moore said, eliciting a chorus of groans and laughter from the audience. “I mean, I just love that one!” Outstream Video   00:00 00:00 Moore is now one of Trump’s nominees for the Federal Reserve Board. On Tuesday, PBS’s Margaret Hoover gave Moore an opportunity to address the racist joke, and Moore’s attempts at clarity quickly turned into a sputtering mess:

HUD Proposes to Evict Citizens and Immigrants from Public Housing if They Have Undocumented Family Members : Immigration Impact

The new rule could affect as many as 32,000 people in mixed-status families who currently receive federal housing benefits. Those families would have to choose between eviction or breaking up the family. This puts at risk vulnerable Americans and immigrants who rely on these subsidies for their housing. HUD argues that these evictions will help reduce wait-lists for public housing, but many low-income housing advocates disagree. Very few, if any, apartments would open because many mixed-status families will opt to split up rather than lose their benefits completely. This is a mean-spirited attempt at addressing major issues with public housing, including long wait-lists and substandard housing conditions. In New York alone there are currently 209,180 people on line for public housing benefits, with an additional 148,000 on line for Section 8 housing. HUD’s proposed regulation has been sent to Congress for a 15 day review period before it is published for a 60 day public comment period.

Nielsen Warned ‘Don’t Tell Trump’ About Election Security: NYT

Don’t fall for it. Nielsen dutifully did her job for nearly a year and a half. She blamed parents for the death of their own kids in U.S. custody, through the family separations whose very existence she denied and then kept denying. She doesn’t need redemption; she needs a conscience, and all indications point to her still not having one.

How Trump treats white people like they are Black – Sam McKenzie Jr. – Medium

My partner and I went to hear Dr. Dyson speak about his latest book. And his line about Trump got a nice laugh and nods from the crowd. But Dr. Dyson’s words stunned me. The wheels of my mind are…

The GOP Doesn’t Have a Line in the Sand | Dame Magazine

Whether this country can recover and restore itself to a functioning democracy is an open question, but the answer will be “no” without a drastic change in tactics by all of us, without a recognition of the challenges we face and the nature of the Trump/Republicans’ war on democratic values. For Trump is unraveling, becoming more unhinged and erratic, more despotic, almost by the day. He is in open cognitive decline. You don’t have to be a shrink or neuropsychologist to see it. Read the transcript of any of his recent speeches: He is incoherent, free-associating, and paranoid, as he warns that his live TV appearance will be “leaked.” He mixes up words, can barely utter a complete sentence. (Don’t mock his confusion of “oranges” for “origins.”  It’s a function of dementia, not stupidity.) That cognitive decline would be scary and destabilizing enough on its own, but married to the character traits of a sociopath, it is even more dangerous. The rage and lack of capacity, the flailing, the insults, the paranoia and conspiracies, the self-aggrandizement, the raw hatred, the lies, the attacks on others, the rejection of facts, the assaults on the most basic of democratic institutions,

Man Arrested For Threatening to Kill Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Other Democrats

A Florida man was arrested today after allegedly leaving threatening voice messages for Congresswomen Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, Congressman Eric Swalwell, and Senator Cory Booker. In a message to Tlaib, 49-year-old John Kless reportedly called the congresswoman a “Taliban bitch” and threatened to throw Omar off the Empire State Building. In his messsage to Booker, Kless repeatedly called him the n-word; to Swalwell, he promised he would be on his “death bed” along with other Democrats. Kless also took the time to voice support for President Trump. Shocker. [Miami New Times]

Ilhan Omar’s 9/11 comments spark more false outrage — and expose anti-Muslim bias

On April 12, 1997 I received a call from my brother, Private First Class Tayyib M. Rashid, a newly minted U.S. Marine. He had called to tell us he had just graduated from boot camp. Ours is an immigrant family, and his service was a source of pride and validation for all of us. We were Americans in a new sense now. This year I filed to run for Virginia Senate — an extension of the American dream my immigrant family and I have cherished. But the fact is that Muslims have been in the United States before the states were created — let alone united. Historians believe that 15 to 30 percent of Africans enslaved and trafficked here were Muslim. Yet, some 400 years later we’re still considered outsiders. Conservative outrage over Rep. Ilhan Omar’s recent comments at a civil rights banquet hosted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) exemplify this exclusion. Speaking about the need for strong civil rights protections, especially for Muslim Americans, Omar said: “CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something, and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.”
