O.C. Kids Sick After Drinking Fancy, Unpasteurized Raw Goat Milk: LAist

Public health officials told the OC Register that the children got campylobacteriosis infection from Claravale Farm’s raw goat milk. Even one of the kids had to be hospitalized. The symptoms aren’t pleasant: they include diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, vomiting and fever. And people usually get the symptoms within two to five days of getting in contact with the organism. The illness is often associated with unpasteurized dairy products and water, and mostly affects young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

It’s not just the SoCal kids, though, who were affected by the farm’s raw milk. Six NorCal folks were diagnosed with the sickness in March after drinking raw milk from the same Paicines farm, according to Free Lance, a San Benito County news site. After the state investigated Claravale Farms, they forced the owners to do a mandatory recall, telling everyone to get rid of all Claravale Farms products with the “March 28” expiration date.

SEOUL, June 4 (Yonhap) — A medical doctor in Seoul came into contact with more than 1,000 citizens while infected with the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), the city government said Thursday, sparking concerns of the further spread of the deadly virus.

The doctor, who works for a large general hospital in the capital city, attended large-scale events this week, even after he was ordered into quarantine for showing suspected symptoms, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Earlier in the day, he was confirmed as the country’s 35th MERS patient, the municipal government said, adding he came into contact with the country’s 14th MERS patient at the hospital where he works.

New Jersey traveler dies from Lassa fever | CIDRAP

A New Jersey man who was hospitalized after returning from West Africa died last night from a Lassa virus infection, the second case to be detected in the United States since 2014, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a statement.

The CDC said though Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic disease similar to Ebola and common in West Africa, it is less likely to be fatal and spread from person to person. It can cause severe disease, however, as it did in the New Jersey man, and efforts are under way to identify the man’s contacts.

Those who were in close contact will undergo 21-day symptom monitoring.
