Avian Flu Diary: Zhong Nanshan On China’s Mutated H7N9 Virus – Oops! Nature upping the ante again. When will humans get the point that mass production and “industrialization” of poultry worldwide is a kiss of death proposition?

H7N9 analyses hint at genetic mutations, drug resistance | CIDRAP

In the latest H7N9 avian influenza developments, analysis of virus samples from China and Taiwan hint at mutations including resistance to the antiviral class of drugs known as neuraminidase inhibitors, and the World Health Organization (WHO) said today that the burgeoning number of cases this season now account for a third of all cases reported since the outbreak began in 2013.

WHO | Seoul virus – United States of America and Canada – “Profits and Potential Pandemics”

Information on Seoul virusSeoul virus is a type of hantavirus that is transmitted from rats to humans after exposure to aerosolized urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents, or after exposure to dust from their nests or bedding. Transmission may also occur from rat bites or when contaminated materials are directly introduced into broken skin or onto mucous membranes. For Seoul virus, the natural host is the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the black rat (Rattus rattus). This virus has been found in both pet rats and wild rat populations around the world. The incubation period varies from 1 to 8 weeks; however, most individuals develop symptoms within 1 to 2 weeks after exposure. Seoul virus infection symptoms can range from mild to severe. In the severe form of the disease, patients can exhibit bleeding and renal syndromes. Inapparent infections can also occur. Seoul virus infection is not transmissible from human to human. There is no effective treatment available for Seoul virus infection.

WHO risk assessment Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is the severe form of the infection with Seoul virus. The case fatality rate (CFR) among humans who develop HFRS due to Seoul virus ranges from 1-2%. Of the 11 cases reported in the United States so far, two were hospitalized and none have died.Although the three HFRS cases in Canada are still under investigation, there is some evidence of an epidemiological link to the United States Seoul virus outbreak. There is no available information on

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is the severe form of the infection with Seoul virus. There is no available information on further distribution of the infected rats outside of the United States and Canada. Rats do not show symptoms of disease when they are infected with Seoul virus. Once infected, rats can continue to shed virus throughout their lives, potentially infecting other rats and humans. The United States CDC is working with state health departments in the United States and others to investigate the outbreak of Seoul virus infections in pet rats and humans, to trace shipments and transport of rats, some of which may be infected with Seoul virus, to better understand how the virus entered the pet trade and to interrupt transmission of Seoul virus to other rats and humans.Because there is presently no effective treatment for Seoul virus infection, preventing infections in people is important. If infected rodents have contact with local rat populations, the infection with Seoul virus could spread to non-infected rodents and consequently change the prevalence of this zoonotic disease, both in rodents and in humans.WHO adviceInternational pet trade has the potential to spread and cause emerging or re-emerging disease in humans. WHO encourages State Parties to developed and maintain the capacity to detect, and report similar events.

SuperSpreader Spin – Making Money and Status from Pandemic News

Pandemic SuperSpreader Spin – this is how spin works to advance status of scientists (income and power) and advance commercial interests of for profit and not-for-profit publications.

  1. Create a new term for a known phenomena and it seems new and thus newsworthy.
  2. Since people have been studying the spread of disease, it has been know that a small number of people can and are responsible for spreading disease quickly if they come in close contact with a large number of people in a short space of time. “Typhoid Mary” was a carrier who worked in restaurants in New York City and could thus come into contact with a large number of people visiting a restaurant where she was employed.
  3. A modern version could be because an ill person has greater mobility than in earlier times. A person who is contagious for influenza or TB could potentially infect hundreds of people in a flight from Manila to Hawaii, Los Angeles and New York City and subway trip home with two transfers and a stop at a local fast food restaurant before going to a welcome home party.
  4. Employ might, could perhaps and maybe to add to spin.

When a new term is spun here can be the overnight result:

“We wondered if it was just because people were there, but we tested [and] it was actually due to the fragmented forest with people present … as people start to encroach.”Fruit bat populations increase in fragmented forest conditions, while their contact with humans also increases.Deforestation is increasing in West Africa to provide land to grow cocoa and palm oil and in central Africa, where other ebola outbreaks have occurred, to meet demand for hardwoods.”It shows there’s different implications in how you encroach in the environment. Ebola outbreak: ‘Superspreaders’ were driving cause of 2014-15 West Africa epidemic – Outbreak News Today – Overblown “Mighta/Coulda” “news” driven by researchers looking for status and newsies for readers?

If superspreading had been completely controlled, almost two thirds of the infections might have been prevented, scientists said in the study. The researchers also noted that their findings were conservative, since they only focused on people who had been buried safely. This suggests that the role of superspreaders may have been even more profound than this research indicates.

If your 6 year-old goes to school when he/she is actively infectious with “?” then she/he is a superspreader. In short, this is not anything new  – it is how disease spreads normally. But to use a special term – superspreader, it sounds new and perhaps more dangerous. It also takes precious attention away from the impact of the facts that greater numbers of infections have a lot to do with modern mobility, humans invading natural landscape in greater numbers, and the over use of anti-bacterials in medicine and agriculture.

Align with Time-Tested Organizations

Alongside protest, however, Hunt says folks should align with existing groups rather than trying to recreate the wheel on your own. “It’s really important to work underneath people who have been doing the work, and that you can learn from,” she says. For most folks it makes the most sense to start locally within your own community, where most great acts of resistance begin. In doing this you can build what Hunt calls “alternative political apparatuses” which can empower people even when the government imposes oppressive laws. Connecting with existing organizations links small groups to more powerful activist engines, increasing the power to make change.Action: Find one to three organizations in your community, or online, that works around your three target issues and sign up to volunteer with or learn more about them. Check out The Resistance Manual and these politically-minded apps.Focus, but Keep Intersectionality in MindUndoubtedly you feel strongly about multiple issues, from women’s rights to civil rights, to the right for all to have affordable healthcare. In practical terms, you may only be able to focus on strategies to deal with one or two at a time. “The more that you can narrow down and be clear about what you can and cannot do, and are willing to do and are interested and curious about, that can help you identify where you want to connect,” Luz Guerra, a long time feminist and activist who has trained hundreds of organizers around the country and internationally, tells Dame. However, Davis points out that in her own realm of environmental work, “Long before white environmentalists began to focus on sustainability, environmental justice activists understand that…it is all connected.” So while you may focus your own activist lens in one direction, be open to “the broader realization of intersectionality,” she says. All of our rights are connected and we can effect more change when no one is excluded from the fight.
