Two California border hospitals hit by surge in COVID-19 cases from Mexico – Reuters

The patients were U.S. citizens believed to live in Mexicali, capital of the Mexican state of Baja California, and had been turned away from hospitals overrun with coronavirus cases there, said Dr. Adolphe Edward, chief executive officer of the El Centro Regional Medical Center.

Edward said his 161-bed hospital in El Centro, the main city in Imperial County about 100 miles east of San Diego, took in 65 COVID-19 patients on Monday night, while the 106-bed Pilgrims Memorial Hospital in nearby Brawley admitted 28.

“Our numbers just skyrocketed last night,” Edward said on his hospital’s Facebook page.

Edward said the emergency rooms of both hospitals have imposed a “divert” order requiring any additional COVID-19 cases be redirected to other medical facilities in the region.

Lancet editor says study cited by Trump in WHO letter doesn’t exist – Business Insider

Richard Horton, The Lancet’s editor-in-chief, disputed Trump’s claims about the study, saying in a Tuesday morning tweet: “Dear President Trump — You cite The Lancet in your attack on WHO. Please let me correct the record. The Lancet did not publish any report in early December, 2019, about a virus spreading in Wuhan.”

“The first reports we published were from Chinese scientists on Jan 24, 2020.”

Canadian pastor charged in Myanmar for defying COVID-19 restriction on gatherings | CBC News

In one video posted in late March, Lah tells worshippers, “If you hear the sermon of God, the virus will never come to you; I declare it with the soul of Jesus Christ.

At another event in April, Lah waved around a Bible and said, “I can guarantee that the church that goes by Jesus’ teachings, there will be no infection.”

The irony of the message in those sermons became apparent when police made their move to lay charges, because the document that spelled out his alleged offence also revealed Lah could not immediately be arrested because he was in hospital.

Lah had tested positive for the coronavirus.

As of Friday, according to Worldometer aggregated data, Myanmar had 181 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including six deaths. Local health authorities link at least two of those deaths to Lah’s gatherings in early April.

Invisible deaths: from nursing homes to prisons, the corona toll is out of sight – and out of mind? | US news | The Guardian

The segregation of Covid deaths out of town and behind locked doors, where most Americans cannot see them, has provided a political boon for Donald Trump. It has allowed the president to downplay the significance of the virus for weeks on end, pushing for the reopening of the economy even though it risks the lives of tens of thousands of largely poor and black and Latino citizens.

That phenomenon was on full display this week when Trump scolded his top infectious diseases official, Dr Anthony Fauci, for saying opening up the country could risk a spike of new infections. Trump said of Fauci’s science-based, factual remark: “To me, it’s not an acceptable answer” – a claim he could never have got away with had the human costs of Covid-19 been more visible.
