Israel demolishes Bedouin village for 53rd time | Maan News Agency

“It is the 53rd demolition since July 2010,” Araqib chieftain Sheikh Sayyah Abu Mdeighim told Ma’an.

“They have brought down all the sheds we built for the summer so we can protect our land and defend ourselves against the oppressive policy of this tyrannical government.”

Large numbers of Israeli police officers and officials from Israel’s Land Authority accompanied the bulldozers.

Families in Araqib managed to re-build five of the sheds after the bulldozers left, Abu Mdeighim said, with Palestinian and Israeli activists due to visit to the village to help rebuild the rest of the structures.

On Monday, thousands of people demonstrated across Israel and Palestine to protest a controversial plan which would see the forced displacement of nearly 40,000 Bedouins in the Negev.

The Israeli government approved the Prawer-Begin plan in 2011, in what it says was an attempt to address the problem of unrecognized Bedouin villages in the Negev desert of southern Israel.

The 2011 proposal was formulated without any consultation with the Bedouin community and rights groups slammed it as a major blow to Bedouin rights.

According to the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, the plan will forcibly evict nearly 40,000 Bedouins and destroy their communal and social fabric, condemning them to a future of poverty and unemployment.

Israel refuses to recognize 35 Bedouin villages in the Negev, which collectively house nearly 90,000 people.

The Israeli state denies them access to basic services and infrastructure, such as electricity and running water, and refuses to place them under municipal jurisdiction.

JERUSALEM: Israel announced a crackdown on Monday against Jewish ultranationalists who vandalise Palestinian property, saying they were tantamount to terrorists and their attacks could fan sectarian violence.

The move followed the arrest of a 22-year Israeli from an Orthodox Jewish town near Tel Aviv for the vandalism of a Christian monastery in the occupied West Bank last year. The attack was carried out in solidarity with hardline Jewish settlers.

Masked Settlers

Settlers on Tuesday assaulted members of the Yesh Din Israeli human rights organization near Qalqiliya, a local official said.

Ghassan Daghlas, who monitors settler activity in the north of the West Bank, told Ma’an that settlers from Havat Gilad attacked a car for the organization and its passengers.

Yesh Din members were visiting the village of Farata to see the suffering of Palestinians there, Daghlas said.

Palestinians managed to move the settlers away, but one activist was injured and taken to an Israeli hospital.

Israeli assaults Al-Aqsa Mosque guard | Maan News Agency

An Israeli extremist on Wednesday assaulted a guard at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound after dozens of Jewish worshipers entered the Islamic holy site.

Muwafaq Hamami was trying to stop an Israeli extremist taking photos of women at the compound when the Israeli hit him and knocked him unconscious, witnesses told Ma’an.

Hamami was taken to Hadassah Medical Center for treatment.

Dozens of Israelis entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Wednesday.

Four Israelis started to perform Jewish prayers on leaving the compound, and Muslim worshipers tried to stop them, leading to further clashes.

Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib condemned the incidents as “very dangerous” and called on Israeli police to stop Jewish worshipers entering the compound without clearance from the Islamic endowment department.

Israeli official blasts idea of Palestinian state | News , Middle East | THE DAILY STAR

(Seldom have I heard such a pointless and self-delusional statement by an Israeli official – the world will not allow you to swallow or wipe out Palestinians.)

The statements by Naftali Bennett, economics minister and leader of the Jewish Home party, chime with similar sentiments expressed by other officials in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government and come as the United States is trying to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

“The idea that a Palestinian state will arise inside the land of Israel has reached a dead end,” Bennett said Monday at a meeting of the Yesha settlement group. “Never in the history of Israel have so many people dealt with so much energy with something so pointless,” he said.

NGO: Settlement construction starts at 7-year high | Maan News Agency

Building starts on settler homes in the Israeli-occupied West Bank hit a seven-year high in the first quarter of 2013, Israeli watchdog Peace Now said on Sunday.

“Between January 2013 and March 2013, construction of 865 new housing units began,” the NGO said in a statement quoting recently released government statistics.

“This is three times as many construction starts compared to the same quarter last year (January-March 2012),” it added. “If compared to the final quarter of last year (October-December 2012), this is an astonishing 355 percent increase.”

The Peace Now report comes as US Secretary of State John Kerry, who last week warned time was running out for a possible peace deal, is expected to return to Israel and the Palestinian territories within days

Settlers attack Palestinian vehicles in East Jerusalem | Maan News Agency

Settlers attacked Palestinian vehicles with rocks late Tuesday in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of al-Tur, locals said.

Settlers from Beit Orot, in the Mount of Olives, damaged several vehicles in the area before a number of young Palestinians confronted them.

Israeli police officers who arrived on the scene arrested three Palestinians, including Amir and Ahmad Abu Sbeitan.

“This is systematic support by the occupation government of the settlers, and state terror aimed at evicting the indigenous residents in order to keep a firm grip on the city,” local al-Tur committee head Mufeed Abu Ghannam told Ma’an.

This is the fourth attack against Palestinians and their property by settlers from Beit Orot over the last five days, Abu Ghannam added.

Israeli forces shoot, injure Gaza farmer | Maan News Agency

A Palestinian farmer was shot and injured by Israeli fire Sunday while he was picking watermelons in Abu Safiyeh neighborhood east of Jabalia, northern Gaza, medics told Ma’an.

Ahmad Hamdin, 21, sustained an injury to his thigh and was evacuated to the Kamal Udwan Hospital in Jabalia, northern Gaza, medics said.

In response to a request for comment, the Israeli army confirmed the injury and said several Palestinians had “attempted to damage” the border fence between Gaza and Israel.

The army said it had asked them to stop approaching the fence, then opened fire at “their lower extremities, identifying a hit.”
