When not to use GLP-1 drugs for weight loss – CRAIN’S COMMENTS

These are valuable drugs that can help many people overcome obesity. GLP-1 is a hormone that affects appetite and digestion and the class of drugs called GLP-1 agonists serve to alter or suppress the workings of that hormone. Two of the most familiar brand names are Wegovy and Ozempic.

Clinical research on these drugs confirms that they can enable individuals to lose up to 20% of their body weight. That can have a massive, positive effect on health and quality of life. However, research has also shown that the impact of these drugs does reach a plateau, beyond which further weight loss may not happen, and that people who stop using these medications may regain some of the weight they lost.(1)

Nothing in this world is perfect.

That said, there’s a new article in Medscape that outlines conditions in which these drugs should not be used, and reinforces the need to have a serious conversation with your doctor before starting these medications.(2)

Specifically, there are concerns with use of these drugs if

  • You have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2.
  • You have had pancreatitis.
  • You have a liver function that is below normal.
  • You are pregnant or might become pregnant.
  • You are a teen or you have an obese child…

Show Yo Ass Saturday – Belladonna’s Flashlight

When I was a young Bella, I remember the ladies in my church, my mother, and every other adult telling the kids to sit down when they thought we were being too noisy or disruptive, what they called ‘doing too much. ‘

There was always this tension in me, a desire to speak up and say, ‘Y’all ain’t doing enough!’ But I knew I had to show respect. The fear of a reprimand was too real. So, like all the other kids, I obediently took my seat and found solace in a quiet corner of the church, often with a view of the stained glass windows.

It wasn’t that we were bad kids, we were just full of life, always laughing and having fun. But that often led to us being scolded. I’m sure many of you can relate to this dynamic of being reprimanded for just being kids.

You know the look!

That look would make a grown man cry and ask what he did wrong. Unfortunately, we were used to the look, so when our moms or adults turned away from us, we gave the look back. I’m sure many of you can relate to this dynamic and the unspoken power of ‘the look, a silent language we all understand.

That look meant we or I were showing my ass and being a little too much. And I would immediately pipe down and become something I wasn’t: a quiet, nonexpressive being.

And that sucked!

So today and every day, I want y’all to be loud, happy, vibrant human beings. Don’t allow anyone to put you on the quiet shelf. Jump down and show yo ass.

And if anyone tells you that you are being them too much, let them know that they aren’t being enough!

You could have chosen any blog to read, but you chose mine, and I’m honored!

Songs I Like (101) | beetleypete

Back to Motown today, and a classic hit from Mary Wells. Written by Smokey Robinson and released in 1964 by Mary, I was only 12 years old at the time, but played this to death on my Dansette record player. Mary left Motown in 1965, after an acrimonious dispute concerning her contract. She signed with Atco records the same year, but never enjoyed the same success. Mary died in 1992, at the age of 49.

Nothing you could say could tear me away from my guy
