Hiltzik: Musk tests a new way to alienate advertisers – Los Angeles Times

Let’s play a parlor game titled “What’s the dumbest thing Elon Musk has ever done?”

Is it promoting tweets from outspoken antisemites and racists on X, formerly Twitter, the social media platform he owns? Embracing antisemitic tweets himself?

Or was it, telling some of the largest corporations in the world to, um, perform a sexual act on themselves because they stopped advertising on the platform? (Warning: Link not safe for work.)

Maybe the top prize goes to his reinstating thousands of accounts of Nazis, white supremacists and disinformation purveyors that had been banned from Twitter by its previous management?

Actually, my vote goes to the federal lawsuit X filed on Aug. 6 accusing big advertisers of colluding in a boycott of the platform, ostensibly because they disapprove of its content…

…Why would any advertisers hoping to attract and keep customers want their ads to be seen on a platform that has become a source of informational sewage? To ask the question is to answer it.

Em defesa ao meu estado de voo – O Outro Lado

No deserto do quintal sem árvores, esqueletos de galhos que perturbam o ar dissimulados de ventos – garras – que na noite vem acompanhadas de aves. o resto, é só esse silêncio e o barulho do chá, nas xícaras. se as palavras dizem os meses nos calendários e a folhinha antiga traz o meridiano nas noites brancas. É breve o escrito nas pedras das runas, e emocionante os vapores dentro da pele, o traço, um risco, o vento me rendendo ao abraço;

os galhos da árvore seca criando sombras no muro. A solidão sendo vontade nos retratos pendurados na parede de tijolos expostos. cuidado frágil escrito em letras garrafais na alma.

Tem dias que a vida é essa ave desligada de vento.

New studies estimate long-COVID rates, identify risk factors | CIDRAP

New survey data from the landmark Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) reveal that 34% of postmenopausal women infected with COVID-19 had symptoms lasting at least 8 weeks, while a separate 2-year telemedicine study shows that 84% and 61% of all infected patients still had symptoms 1 and 2 years later, respectively.

Fatigue, malaise, brain fog common

For the WHI study, a Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center–led research team surveyed 37,280 women aged 50 to 79 years at 40 US clinical centers about long-COVID symptoms and their duration from August to December 2021. They used machine learning and logistic regression models to gauge the strength of symptoms’ association with long COVID. The results were published today in the Annals of Epidemiology.

“Long-term health, psychosocial and demographic data are needed to fully understand long COVID risk factors in the elderly and to design and implement effective prevention,” the study authors wrote.

Of 37,280 survey respondents, 3.3% reported testing positive for COVID-19 (average age, 84 years), and 34% said they still had neurologic, cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal symptoms, as well as fatigue and malaise. Nearly all respondents (91%) were White, and no differences between race and long-COVID status were observed.

Songs I Like (55) | beetleypete

Joe Jackson is a classically-trained English musician who writes his own songs, but he would be the first to say that his looks somewhat stalled his career once video became so important. Not a conventional-looking ‘pop star’, he had to make a career from music and songs alone, for those that appreciated his talent. He rarely had any huge hits, and some of his albums failed to chart.

He later changed styles, embracing Swing and Jazz on some recordings, followed by a move to New York City in 1984. Now 70 years old, he currently resides in Berlin, Germany, working on various projects including symphonies and film soundtracks.
