The Dangerous Dilemma of Cutting Corners | From Behind the Pen

When you purchase a new home, and these days that is quite an investment, you expect your inspection to be done accurately, as well as, professionally. You hope that you’ve not purchased a lemon. A “lemon house” is a new home that has major flaws that weren’t obvious before the purchase. In other words, a money pit so to speak. These homes of cutting corners aren’t resorted to lower-income dwellings but are found in the upper echelon of executive homes. We aren’t talking about shortcuts for efficiency, but cutting corners like leaving unlevel floors, boring screws in walls that compromise water pipes it pierced, or unlevel walls from top to bottom.

Recently, I’ve seen one too many reports on the news where builders constructing new homes are cutting corners or doing substandard work just to hurry and get the project done. Homes are popping up everywhere like a Houdini magic trick, which reminds me of the story about the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf, huffing, puffing, and blowing their house down. What materials are being used or should I say, not being used for durability and sustainability to keep you from experiencing buyer’s remorse? After homeowners have done their walk-through they expect honesty from their agent, the builder, and above all, the inspector. Cutting corners may sometimes come down to obvious esthetics, but it can also become more problematic and costly in the days and years to come after you sign the dotted line.

I know that all of us work hard to get what we want to enjoy in life. There really is no margin of error when it comes down to money wasted. I also heard someone in the business say crassly, “Well nothing is perfect.” But as I listened to people who have made purchases, be it homes, cars, food at restaurants, or groceries, complain that they didn’t get what they paid for, I totally get it. When I began working, I was trained to do my best and give my best in my job, whatever that job was. I still exercise that ethic no matter what it is I am doing or whether I am getting a paycheck for it.

Repeat, satisfied customers were the main objective of a business’ growth when I became a taxpaying employee. Quality products/services and great customer service ensured satisfied and loyal customers. Sadly, I find much of the work ethic these days does not reflect the work ethic when I began working. It’s even sadder when employers and employees think customers don’t notice when corners are cut and quality is compromised. That can be a dangerous dilemma for their business and reputation. Consumer trust and satisfaction are a combination that is earned.
