Buy American? Trump makes over $1 million from store selling products of foreign origins

As of Friday, there are currently over 100 products under the “Made in America” collection on the online Trump Store, where they are marked as either “Made in America” or “Made in the USA,” according to a CNBC review. Yet, at least another 180 items that CNBC reviewed are labeled as having been made in Scotland, France or Italy, are labeled as “Decorated in the USA” or have no country of origin listed at all.

That means a little more than a third of the items in the online Trump Store are described as officially made in the United States. There is also an in-person Trump Store located in New York’s Trump Tower.

Russian teams search rubble from Beirut explosion | Euronews

A Russian search and rescue team in Beirut has unearthed three bodies under the rubble near the city’s port, three days after the deadly explosion that killed more than 150 people.

Russia has sent five planes carrying medical workers, teams from the Emergency Ministry and humanitarian aid to Lebanon to help with the aftermath of the explosion.

“The group of rescuers in the first shift is working at the locations pointed out by the (search and rescue) dogs, they are widening the gaps between the concrete slabs to see what can be done,” said Igor Akmayev, the head of the Russian rescue group in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the makeshift hospital set up by the Russian team at a stadium near the explosion site said it had treated 12 people since Thursday.

Banning TikTok: Are We Reproducing the Chinese Internet in America? – BIG by Matt Stoller (Facebok’s role in all this)

Facebook is in fact the reason we have a TikTok problem to begin with. When Twitter launched a TikTok-like product Vine years before, Facebook actively killed the product by refusing to let Vine access its APIs on the same terms other corporations got. Mark Zuckerberg personally made the call to shut off access to Vine, and Twitter eventually shut the product down. Then, Facebook allowed TikTok to advertise massively on its platform, at a time Zuckerberg was currying favor with the Chinese Communist Party to try to get into the Chinese market. In other words, Zuckerberg killed an American competitor using anti-competitive means, and promoted a Chinese competitor for his own business interests.

Now we have a TikTok problem, but that’s because policymakers refused to enforce anti-monopoly rules against tech giants. Or as Republican Congressman Ken Buck put it to Gilad Edelman in Wired on his worries about big tech monopolies being slothful,

“The reality is, the way we got to a dominant position in the tech sector is because we encouraged innovation. And if we stop encouraging innovation, we may dominate for the next five or 10 years in particular areas, but 20 years down the road, we won’t be dominant.”
