Covid-19 cases in US children have increased by 90% in the last four weeks, report says – CNN

Dr. Sean O’Leary, vice-chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Infectious Diseases, told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday that coronavirus cases in children should be taken seriously.
“It’s not fair to say that this virus is completely benign in children,” said O’Leary. “We’ve had 90 deaths in children in the US already, in just a few months. Every year we worry about influenza in children, and there are roughly around 100 deaths in children from influenza every year.”
Leary said that multiple factors have led to a recent increase in the number of coronavirus infections in children in the past couple of weeks, including increased testing, increased movement among children and a rise in infection among the general population.
“When you see a lot more infections in the general population, you’re going to see a lot more infections in children,” said O’Leary.
“We all have to take this virus seriously, including taking care of our children,” said O’Leary.

Aged care royal commission hears how hundreds are at risk of premature death from coronavirus failings – ABC News – Australia

Professor Ibrahim, a specialist in geriatric medicine, said it was “inappropriate” to use “advanced care plans” as a way to manage the pandemic. Advanced care plans set out what healthcare a patient facing a medical crisis should receive. He said it was also wrong to leave COVID-positive residents in their care home. “We have the knowledge to do better, we failed because we’ve treated residents as second-class citizens,” he said. “There’s an absence of accountability, and there is no consequences for failing to deliver good care in aged care.”

Spain again grapples with Europe’s worst coronavirus infection rate, Europe News & Top Stories – The Straits Times

When the lockdown measures were completely lifted on June 21, the country reported just 238 new infections and it had just eight cases per 100,000 people.

But infections have surged since the first week of July, in part because the government “rushed” to open the economy “surely thinking about tourism”, a pillar of the Spanish economy, said Joan Cayla, the head of Barcelona’s Tuberculosis Investigation Unit, which now focuses on Covid-19.
