Media and Law Enforcement Response to White Vigilante Shooter Proves There Are Two Americas

egiypdydrfzmdxtz9gkd.jpg

You know why conservative white America hates the Black Lives Matter movement so much? It’s because the movement undermines business-as-usual America. And by “business,” I mean this nation’s most profitable enterprise: racism. Why else would anyone—especially law enforcement or any media outlet—go out of their way to…

The prime minister blames ‘mutant’ algorithms but it’s increasingly clear his government is not up to the job

Boris Johnson has found a new role for Britain’s most endangered transport mode, the bus. He throws civil servants under it. After decapitating the Foreign Office and Cabinet Office, he has rid himself of Public Health England and those he regards as to blame for recent exam U-turns, Sally Collier of Ofqual and Jonathan Slater of the Department for Education. They have gone to save the skin of that Nureyev of U-turns, Gavin Williamson.

Mind-changing has become the leitmotif of Johnson’s government. Derision would greet him if he used Margaret Thatcher’s boast to a Tory conference: “The Johnson’s not for turning.” The Guardian has kept a tally of 11 U-turns, from lockdowns and quarantines to school exam results, key-worker visas and Huawei’s role in 5G.

California at odds with CDC over looser COVID-19 protocols – Los Angeles Times

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday said he disagrees with the CDC’s new guidance and insisted that it will not impact California.

“I don’t agree with the new CDC guidance. Period. Full stop,” he said. “We will not be influenced by that change.”

Newsom said Wednesday that California had signed a contract with an East Coast medical diagnostics company to more than double the number of coronavirus tests that can be processed in the state, eventually expanding capacity to roughly a quarter of a million tests a day.

Under the $1.4-billion agreement, a new Santa Clarita lab will be able to provide testing results within two days, far quicker than the average five- to seven-day processing times offered by other labs.

White supremacists and militias have infiltrated police across US, report says | US news | The Guardian

The report notes that over the years, police links to militias and white supremacist groups have been uncovered in states including Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia.

Police in Sacramento, California, in 2018 worked with neo-Nazis to pursue charges against anti-racist activists, including some who had been stabbed, according to records.

And just this summer, German writes, an Orange county sheriff’s deputy and a Chicago policeman were caught wearing far-right militia logos; an Olympia, Washington, officer was photographed posing with a militia group; and Philadelphia police officers were filmed standing by while armed mobs attacked protesters and journalists.

‘We’ve all had enough’: Kenosha in anguish over Jacob Blake shooting | US news | The Guardian

“The bubble had to eventually pop and it did. Our community moved on from asking for help to demanding it. But in the meantime, we’re going to take care of ourselves. Sadly, we have to be the ones to do it, but this is what happens when people ignore the needs of a large part of our country,” said Tom Judt, a Kenosha native, as he helped clear up.

He added: “The destruction is going to hit us hard economically, but it’s awesome to see everyone working their butt off in the heat to support each other.”

Runnels says the last few days have been especially traumatic because when reports of a Black man shot by the Kenosha police reached social media, members of his family flooded his phone inbox thinking it was him.

“They were trying to make sure it wasn’t me. That’s a whole different feeling, I can’t explain it. And when I was finally able to get home and see what happened to [Jacob Blake] it was a lot to handle,” said Runnels.

For the Wisconsin state representative David Bowen, the goal is creating “the future that everyone deserves”, no matter their race or class.

“Jacob Blake was a part of protecting and serving his community by breaking up that fight. But, the police still came in and violently removed him from the situation because they have the power to uphold a system that thrives on removing Black bodies,” Bowen said on Wednesday.

Back on her porch, Edwards said: “It’s time for the people in power to put human lives and the needs of the community first.”

She added: “We’ve all had enough. Now we all just need to come together, help each other in whatever ways are needed and make sure our government actually supports us.”
