Five health experts discuss Texas coronavirus data | The Texas Tribune

Dr. Ron Cook, professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and the city of Lubbock’s public health authority: The biggest problem … is the fact that when we find out a week or two later, several days post facto, in some cases 10 days or so later, that we get a positive test result, then who knows how many thousands of people they’ve spread that to exponentially, right? Ideally you want to get a positive test as soon as possible, call them as soon as possible and get in contact with them to find out who they’ve been in contact with closely.

Trump Supporters Bring Chaos to Portland in the Name of Their ‘Law and Order’ President

The pro-Trump caravan, which drew hundreds of trucks full of rightwing rabble-rousers to the Oregon city, began in the suburbs with a route that purportedly intended to keep all vehicles on the highway, The New York Times reports. Some of those demonstrators splintered off from the main group, however, and drove into the city’s downtown, where they harassed locals as well as counterprotesters of various affiliations.

Caravan organizers encouraged protesters to arm themselves, according to The Oregonian, though videos posted on social media mostly show Trump supporters shooting paintballs and firing mace at counterprotesters, who themselves hurled unidentifiable objects back at the trucks while yelling at the outsiders to leave. Some caravan participants left their vehicles to punch and otherwise physically antagonize counterprotesters, who stood their ground.

CDC guidance to not test asymptomatic people is ‘unfortunate,’ Gottlieb says

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former FDA chief under President Donald Trump, said on Sunday that the new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to not test asymptomatic people for Covid-19 was  “unfortunate” because those people could be at high risk of contracting the infection.

“We should be testing those people to make sure they haven’t become infected and aren’t asymptomatic carriers because we know that they can spread the infection,” Gottlieb said in an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “They’re less likely to spread the infection, but they can still spread the infection.”

Does Facebook still sell discriminatory ads?

image-1-6-796x417.png
In May, a Wisconsin health care agency, Tenderness Health Care, posted a job ad on Facebook looking for personal care workers. According to Facebook’s “Why am I seeing this ad” pop-up, when the agency purchased the ad, it asked Facebook to not show it to anyone over 54 years of age. And they asked Facebook to show it specifically to people who have “African American multicultural affinity.” Facebook, apparently, complied. The problem? Federal law prohibits employers from discriminating on the basis of age and race, including in advertising open jobs. When The Markup brought the ad to Facebook’s attention, the…

Florida Department of Health claims number of COVID-19 cases in schools is confidential – (untrue – another attempt to look good by not posting information on real data)

“We feel very strongly that families need to know this information. Particularly parents, because they are making enrollment, attendance decisions based on this information. It’s the district’s stance that we want to provide it,” said Pierce. “We have engaged our own attorneys assigned to the school system and we are now in the process of doing what the DOH advised that we do. Which, is to seek the permission of the state department of health because again, you know, if I were a parent with a child in school right now, I would want to know because that’s going to impact the decisions I make.”

Iowa tops NYT’s national list of COVID-19 hot spots | News, Sports, Jobs – Times Republican

The Times reported sharp increases in cases in Story County, home of Iowa State University; Johnson County, where the University of Iowa is located; Webster County, where a prison in Fort Dodge has had outbreaks; Lee County in southeast Iowa; and Marion County, which includes Knoxville.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds closed bars and similar facilities late Thursday in six counties — Black Hawk, Dallas, Johnson, Linn, Polk and Story — noting that university parties and other gatherings sans masks had been one factor in the spread of the virus. Her action brought immediate protests from owners of bars who said thousands of jobs could be lost, along with some businesses.
