The Portland Protests: What This Teenager Learned – The New York Times

So Ms. Allen’s summer is different this year. She has not had time for dance classes. She is instead one of the many protesters who have rallied nightly in downtown Portland, mounting one of the longest-running cries for racial justice since Mr. Floyd’s death on May 25.

Next week, she will start her junior year of high school. The main thing she is worried about is how her class schedule will conflict with protests.

Earlier, the Victorian premier, Daniel Andrews, labelled the protesters “selfish”. “It is not smart, it is not safe, it is not lawful, in fact it is absolutely selfish to be out there protesting,” he said. “The only fight we should be engaged in is against this virus.” Victoria police said the protests were “disappointing” and were “putting the lives of Victorians at risk”. They said more than 150 infringement notices were issued. Fourteen of the arrests were for breaching the chief health officer’s directions, while one was for allegedly assaulting police.

Claudia Rankine: ‘By white privilege I mean the ability to stay alive’ | Books | The Guardian

‘I do not see a single student wash their hands’: teacher’s diary of the first week back at school | Education | The Guardian – Great Britain

Throughout the day, unmasked adults lead groups of unmasked children around the school grounds without socially distancing from them at all. The scenes shock me in the same way as when I look back at archive footage of music concerts.

‘Everyone was drenched in the virus’: was this Austrian ski resort a Covid-19 ground zero? | World news | The Guardian

At least 28 people who visited Ischgl in late February and early March died of Covid-19. Four of the eight men in Jackson’s group fell ill with the virus on their return. Many thousands more are thought to have caught it at the resort. By mid-March, it was clear that tourists travelling in and out of the Paznaun valley had been the key accelerators behind the first wave of the virus on the European continent.

Civil servants’ union threatens strike action over back-to-office plans | Politics | The Guardian

Pouring cold water on the government campaign, Alex Brazier, the Bank’s executive director for financial stability strategy and risk, said it was “not possible” for a mass return to city centre offices this autumn due to Covid guidelines, concerns over the health risks, and transport capacity problems.

Analysis of mobile phone data last month suggested only 17% of UK workers had returned to the office, despite the push by the government for people to stop working from home.
